Superstition, an intriguing thriller, by Karen Robards occurs on beautiful Pawleys Island, situated just off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, where fifteen years ago 17-year-old Tara Mitchell suffered a brutal death and her friends seventeen-year-old Lauren Schultz and sixteen-year-old Rebecca Iverson mysteriously disappeared. Using the anniversary of this traumatic event Nicole Sullivan (correspondent for Twenty-four Hours with dreams of becoming a co-host on a New York based morning news program) returns to her hometown where she joins with her mother, famed psychic medium, Leonora James to do an expose on this grisly unsolved mystery that still haunts the town’s residents.
The plot continues when Nicky (after a face-off with newly appointed police Chief Joe Franconi, over the filming of the show) finds herself the target of a serial killer whose first victim is Nicole’s colleague, Karen Wise. Since Karen is found shortly after the live, on-the-scene filming of the first murder scene the question becomes has the long-dormant killer resurfaced or this merely a copycat killing. Despite this, however, and even after Nicky receives personal contact by the murderer, she refuses to take the situation seriously enough which results in several people being brutally murdered.
Overall Robard’s latest romantic thriller, Superstition, ripples with chills as the sadistic killer is slowly, revealed and turns out to be one of the last people you would suspect. Fortunately, for the reader, Robards does an excellent job of combining the mystery with suspense, the paranormal, a little romance and even a little comedic effect in the form of Cleo the pig. In my estimation, Superstition meets all the requirements for a fast-paced, entertaining read and I would recommend it to those out there who enjoy a little more than the blood and guts of the common murder mystery.
