In Eyeshot, Hightower creates a suspenseful police thriller that provides you with a host of suspects from a jealous husband to a highly respected
Cincinnati district attorney, any of which could be the diabolical murderer of multiple victims. In addition, Ms Hightower provides the reader with down-to-earth, flesh and blood detectives as she works to solve the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Julia Winchell who had witnessed an unsolved murder eight years earlier as a student at the University of Cincinnati.
The suspects that are incorporated into the story line include Butch Winchell (Julia Winchell’s husband and father to their two small children); Jeffrey Barber (Julia’s supposedly secret lover, who was one of the last people to see her) and golden boy Gage Caplin (Ace District Attorney for the city of Cincinnati whose first wife was brutally murdered a few years earlier leaving behind a 2-year-old daughter). Other players that play a significant role include Cincinnati detective Sonora Blair (a single mother of two); her partner, Sam Delarosa; and Deputy Smallwood (who is romantically linked to
Sonora), as well as, Gage’s pregnant second wife, Colleen (Collie) Caplin who has reason to fear for her life. Fortunately, for the reader, Hightower does a decent job of inter-relating all of these characters to give us an easy, entertaining read.
Eyeshot’s intriguing story line quickly begins when Butch Winchell travels to Cincinnati, from his home in Clinton, Tennessee, to report that his wife who had been attending a small business conference there was missing. Of course, this makes him an immediate suspect when a mutilated body found down I-75 south between London, Kentucky and Clinton, Tennessee turns out to be the remains of his wife. However, as the story unfolds you find out that Butch is not the only suspect as the clues that Julia left behind cause the detective’s to focus on Cincinnati District Attorney Gage Caplin who attended the University of Cincinnati at the same time as a missing coed was found murdered. To make matters worse Sonora and Sam think that time is running out for pregnant Collie Caplin (wife of Gage) as the politico apparently believes that he can get away with murder. While Lynn Hightower may not be Cornwell, she has written a succinctly beautiful novel that I found to be a quick read with a strong underlying plot that made it easy to finish off in one sitting.
