Do No Harm, by Gregg Andrew Hurwitz draws you, from the beginning pages, into the deepest recesses of a psychopath’s mind enabling you to see the twisted logic for his actions. In addition, Hurwitz’s descriptive genius forces you to face the sheer evil of these same actions and to wonder how such people can exist in a civilized world.
The novel begins when a young, beautiful UCLA Medical Center nurse (Nancy Jenkins, the sister of an LAPD officer) stumbles into the ER blinded and grotesquely disfigured after being attacked just outside the medical center’s doors. The physician in charge, Dr David Spier, is appalled at what he sees but assumes, until a second attack, that it is just a case of random violence. As the plot continues Dr Spier, who holds the Hippocratic oath sacred, finds himself viewed as a pariah by the police when he is accidentally responsible for the escape of Clyde Slade , (the psychopath responsible for the horrible crimes). Fortunately for Dr Spier, however, he has made some very good friends throughout his years at the center but unfortunately for them that very friendship endangers their lives.
While somewhat macabre, Hurwitz’s Do No Harm is on an equal scale with works by Dean Koontz and James Patterson. If you want a thriller that will keep you turning page after page until late into the night Do No Harm is a must read.
