Throwing A Little Old-Timey Religion Into The Politics

The problem with all of us is we adhere too much to the adage
regarding looking out for number one. Caring for anyone else is
viewed as a sign of weakness. Worrying about your neighbor is
considered idiocy. Loving your enemies will lead to nothing but
getting stabbed in the back. This is exactly why our world is quickly
becoming, excuse the crude term, crap.

C.S. Lewis once said: “We all want progress. But progress means
getting nearer to the place where you want to be. If you are on the
wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the
right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the
most progressive man. There is nothing progressive about being
pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake. And I think if you look
at the present state of the world, it is pretty plain that humanity
has been making some big mistake. We are on the wrong road. And if
that is so, we must go back. Going back is the quickest way on.”

I believe it is safe to say that most of us, if not all of us, can
relate to what he said. We live our lives striving to do as little
wrong as possible, when we should be living our lives to do as much
right as we can. I myself am guilty of this the most, for I have the
audacity to write about what I am still fighting desperately to
change.

More often than not, we find ourselves satisfied with the way we lead
our lives, regardless of how empty or meaningless they may be. We tend
to become complacent and just accept the cards we’re dealt. Who can
blame us? In a world where success is defined by compiling
achievements and stockpiling money, people tend to forget that there’s
more to life. We shouldn’t be satisfied with who we are now because
God is continually trying to change us. No, I’m not implying that we
need to change the way we look, just our outlook. We all need to
change. Anyone who isn’t perfect needs to change. If anyone thinks
they’re perfect, they’re the ones who should change the most.

If we let Him, God will continually mold us to become better people.
To instill purpose in our lives. To help us make progress. All of us
have walked down the wrong road(s). Some of us are still on that road
(myself included). Isn’t it about time we head on back? [Gerald Gan]
