Blogs R Us

Yesterday the New York Times ran an article reporting on blogs for classrooms. Some of the proponents’ logic escapes me. It sounds as if the teachers promote classroom blogs to decrease their work, and they don’t give a hoot about encouraging good writing. One part gave me a laugh: “The Little Miami School District near Cincinnati plans to require teachers to maintain blogs for their classes once they are trained on the technology, which should be completed sometime in the 2005-6 school year.” In my experience, teachers reject being “trained” (they want professional development), and they often refuse to learn new technologies whether hardware, software, or processes.
One exception is a friend who actually bills himself “Mr. Technology” and operates the computer lab in a rather advanced (wealthy) elementary school. He set up a web page for his classroom and requires his students create PowerPoint demos, Excel spreadsheets, and other MicroSoftware products and upload them to the website. He balked when I suggested a blog.
