Let Them Have Blogs!

The San Diego (CA) Unified School District, eighth largest public school district in the US with 138,000 students, is calling on the local web design community to help it craft an RFP. Someone in the district envisions a one-size-fits-all comprehensive online system to serve the teachers, parents, students, vendors, administraters, and the public.

Buried in the RFI (request for information) on page 12 section 11.3 is the capability “For students, also add 11.3.1 Blog/online journal”. Uh, huh. They haven’t money for enough books or art or music teachers, but they want to give the kids something with which to inflict their poor literacy on the world. I listen to some of these children walking by my house twice daily. I can’t imagine that they could create blog entries that would ever pass the smut filters. Oh, wait! Those only work the other way, to protect the kids, don’t they?
