I can tell from the “Trojan” on daddy’s PC the user level skills are NOT five stars but more like 3. Thinks they know what they are doing, but can’t admit they could be wrong. So I can see why they can’t get Vista to work the way it’s suppose to.

If you want Vista to work like it’s suppose to, do some more research and buy some new hardware, and do a fresh install on a clean drive. Once you do that USE virtual pc and install XP on it to do your surfing or downloading so the viruses are contained. And once you installed XP on the VPC, take the VPC HD and the configure file as well as sometimes it gets corrupted and back them up so when it gets messed up bad enough, you just copy your backup over the mess and your back to square one with a fresh copy with a whole lot less time spent getting there.

To be a five star, you have to admit that half the time you don’t know what your doing. You can troubleshoot only to find the solution to be an easy thing you should have checked first. 5 Stars can make this mistake often. And the most important. You can research, and research and still be wrong. Nothing like Trial and Error. What may not work for one person, may work for another because they found a simple trick to making it work. And another important thing. Don’t be so quick to blame. I have an Asus motherboard that has a couple quirks. The first, the lan has some issues sometimes. If internet goes down, it may not pick it back up until I shut down the computer and let it sit for a few minutes before powering it back up. And my motherboard is picky about wanting 1.8v of ram to boot up. Anything more and it can cause problems if the CMOS is cleared.

It’s easy to play the blame game when something upsets you. You really outta try working on that. It’s not cool and makes you look foolish to those that see you as a child throwing a fit. And I don’t mean to sound mean, because I’m the same way. I’m a child throwing a fit when my toys don’t work and I’d like an answer as well so I can get it working! Sometimes it takes me a few days to research and figure out my answer or in some cases a work-a-round.

From your posting, it doesn’t appear your interested in learning how Vista will work for you, but if you are, let me know and I’ll give you a list of the hardware and software I used that works with Vista without any issues. You build a computer in the same fashion, you will change how you feel about Vista unless your just plain stubborn.

I would think that anyone who has a copy of "Windows 7" would be under a non-disclosure agreement not to discuss it.

I hate Bill Gates because of his hideously insecure, bloated software. I feel my hatred is fully justified. People tell me that if it weren’t for this alleged software, I’d be out of a job. I disagree. We could use less bloated software and still be assured of jobs. Until there’s such thing as plug-n-play desktops to corporate networks, we’ll all work.

I strongly suspect that after we go to neural computer control (Brain Helmets), people STILL won’t be able to operate them

Windows 98 Explorer crashes - due to bad memory management - any time a large number of files are renamed and then the machine is not rebooted

Speaking of reboots - generally needed at least once every couple of days, if not MUCH more frequently

The ability to only use 512 MB of memory - although the apps took less memory, the differences are not commensurate - it is still better to have bloated apps on XP with 2 GB memory

The problem with drives over 128 GB - they can’t be used with Windows 98 without special software, either shaky amateur stuff or something from a drive manufacturer, which is easily attacked by virus - the kind that do work on Win9x - so that all information on the drive is toast

Just because you don’t like Vista (totally understandable) the choices of Windows 2000 or XP are both better than Win 98

Great for back-door windoze fixes/tweaks. Much better for image-based backups. Older (and better) games run nicer, too.

W98 is itself a DOS app. But any 2K/XP system can be easily setup to dual-boot W98’s DOS 7.1.

Oddly though, it worked fine on Mrs WereBo’s PC (both PC’s use WinXP SP3), no time-outs or slowness, totally transparent to incoming and outgoing data..

Incidentally, you needn’t run all the realtime processes: I just ran the standard shield and I was probably safe enough in limited user account.

As for all operating systems being insecure, I prefer one which doesn’t need a virus scanner update every day, doesn’t need a spyware scanner and has a firewall which is utterly transparent to the user. I have used linux for eight years without security problems as it is secure by design; windows is insecure by design. There are currently 1,200.000 viruses for windows and about 10 for linux.

Aside from the fact that 32 bit Vista is poking up against the 4 Gig RAM max, the system is not half bad for what it does.

I think Mi¢ro$oft screwed the pooch when they failed to stick up for their own creation, allowing the myth that Vista sucks to gain credence. Every O/S sucks, just ask Three Trolls In A Baggie.

So if you run XP probably stay with it [and RAM up from 512MB-2 GB]. OTOH, if you buy a new computer, probably Vista is great [with 2-3 GB RAM], not too expensive, and easier to make relatively secure.

Now there are those [including journalists who have nothing better to do than string words with the expectation of payment] who say just wait for Windoz 7. How does history, ancient or modern, allow one to imagine 7 will be anything but a disaster straight out of the box? In a few years with SP2 or whatever, 7 might be a great system, whatever it might be, and likely an improvement on Vista as fresh minted–or not.

On the third hand, if you are a geek or a casual user of the Internet, why not have someone install Ubuntu for you [with 512MB-1.5 GB RAM] and be done with Micro$oft all-to-gether?

These things dont magically appear on your computer. They have to be installed.
