It’s taunting me. I sit here working in XP or Linux and am perfectly satisfied. I have some favorite programs. Flash, Dreamweaver, Nero, and a slew of freeware. I am able to do everything I want to… well, DO!
But it still tempts me.
I have a copy of Windows Vista Business, which I’ve had it since about a month after it came out. I was going to wait to install it the next time I install the OS (which I do about every six months). But I have never bothered even trying it yet. By seeing the problems Chris (and many others) have had, I just said forget it. However I am tempted to give it a try. The specs of my computer are of the needed speed and capacity - it’s compatibility I am worried about. So here are the specs:
- Case
500 W Power Supply with 1 Side Intake Fan, 1 Back Intake Fan, and 1 Back Exhaust Fan - Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-K8U, Socket 754, ULi 1689 chipset, 230 Mhz Bus - Processor
AMD 2800+ Athlon 64, Socket 754, 2.2 Ghz (Overclocked to 2.59 Ghz) - Processor Cooling
Thermaltake CLP0075 AMD Athlon 64 FX55 CPU Cooler w/ Heatpipe - Optical Drive
Sony DW-Q30A DVD+/-RW - Hard Drive
Western Digital 200 GB / 7200RPM / 2MB - Memory
2 GB RAM (1 GB x 2) - 400Mhz - Audio
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 - 7.1 - PCI - Video
nVidia GeForce FX-5500 256MB - AGP - Ethernet
Integrated RealTech RTL8139/810x Fast Ethernet NIC
So I guess what I am asking is for any problems anybody has had with Vista. Is your hardware supported? What about software? If you have had a problem, how did you fix it? I don’t want to just hear about Vista problems, though. I want to hear about how Vista has improved your computing experience. Be it your work, or gaming, or however you use your gear.
I’m going, or not going, to install this based on what you guys say, so let me know what you think.

Hi Paul,
I have a very similar setup like yours with the exception of a Asus mobo. I also am using the NVidia 5500 and it works fine with Vista Ultimate. 2G of RAM seems to be the sweet spot.
What I did was I bought a Seagate 120g drive on sale last November and installed Ultimate on it. I dual boot with XP which is on a separate drive. Just a thought.
I would recommend using the Vista advisor to see how compatible your current software is with Vista.
Good luck. Ron

I’ve heard of issues with the Soundblaster Audigy 2 cards and Vista but I can’t verify that. Also, I had some issues with the GeForce FX-5500 256MB AGP card, where I fould two somewhat working drivers. One from MS, the other from NVidia. With one driver, the GUI was smooth but no Video played, Media Center didn’t launch. The other driver played video, launched Media Center, but the GUI would stop responding or freeze for a split second every 2 seconds like clockwork, Just moving the mouse around the desktop with nothing running. I was running some Asus mobo that I can’t recall at this time and a Sempron 64, 2800+. No overclocking. This was a few months back though, so there may be better drivers out now. Needless to say, I went with XP.
