Universal Healthcare Would Help My Business
I was chatting with a friend of mine today and we discussed when exactly we could make the leap from working a 9 to 5 job for a company to running our own business. How much money would it take? $40k a year? $50? 60? In the end, the answer wasn’t the amount of money, but would we have the ability to be covered under a health insurance plan.
Over and over, this topic comes up with entrepreneurs that want to make the jump into being their own boss. It’s a tremendous blow when you lose health insurance. I myself was unemployed all summer long. My side business could probably be grown into something that could easily pay the bills, but it doesn’t come anywhere near paying the bills and health insurance. When faced with this problem, many Americans just fall right back into another secure, corporate job. Their businesses never grow into what they could be since 40 hours a week are going toward another business.
If only we had universal healthcare. I know we’d probably have to make some sacrifices. Taxes may be a bit higher. But what matters most is that my friends and I would be able to run our own business without the worry of health insurance. Can you imagine how many small businesses would sprout up overnight? Hopefully we’ll get to see soon.

Universal healthcare will not spring out from nowhere to become the panacea you seek. If you think healthcare is expensive now, wait til the gov’t gets hold of it. Rest assured, you will pay for it; just differently.
In the meantime, one of the most crucial aspects of coverage for some is pre-existing conditions. If your employer covers you, there are no pre-x clauses. If you purchase insurance on your own, you’re out of luck. Look for a group to join to get better coverage.
And best of luck in taking your side job full time!

Presently, there is a type of unviersal coverage available to all Americans — The Army Reserves. For one weekend a month and two weeks out of the year I should say that is a no-brainer. You can get healtcare through the Army. And run your business and get training. If your young and fit and don’t have any major medical issues it is easy to try and start your own business. Instead of worrying about how much you need health insurance, count how much you saved when you weren’t seek, each month.

The “promise” of “universal” health care will be nowhere near the expensive and even more intrusive reality it will be. State of Mass. has tried this and while now 97% of the state’s population is “covered”, they now have the highest premiums in the US and a distinct shortage of primary care doctors.
Until health care “reform” focuses on improving our health, it will just be moving lots of money around in different ways that will hurt job creation, not help it.
