No! Droid Does Not Need iTunes
I’ve listened to the Apple fanboys crow on about how the Motorola Droid doesn’t have iTunes. They say it’s “Missing the experience” of iTunes and purchasing music in the iTunes Store. I have a question. Why would a wireless phone need to connect to anything to get content? It’s a wireless phone!
The iPhone requires me to attach it to a PC to sync content to it. The Droid has an Amazon store where I can download content directly to the phone. Even deleting a song on the iPhone is a pain since it has to be done from iTunes. My Droid allows me to just tap and hold the track and select Delete.
No smartphone should require its owner to also own a PC to use it. We’re moving beyond the PC and into an era where all that we need can be in our pocket, and iTunes is so 2005.

There are so many alternatives to Apples iTune store. I am not sure why people assume that the store is the only way to aquire music? Amazon is one place, but there are also so many others to choose from as well.

Wow…you must be sooooo anti-Apple. Here’s the deal. See, I have a HUGE collection of disc’s that I ripped from the early 90’s, 200’s, etc. Using your post, I’d have no way of getting my music onto the Droid. Technology is technology. If something that’s 2005-era still works today, and works well as a database for our music, then it’s fine. There are plenty of alternatives.
You are correct in the sense of data. Data should be allowed to be synced OTA, and in the case of Android-phones, those who use Google for their PIM have the luxury of such syncing. Those who use an iPhone and shell out $99 towards MobileMe can sync that way as well. Don’t start knocking MobileMe though, because I have a few words for it myself.
The point is…every smartphone/media device NEEDS some sort of connection to the desktop to transfer media. Having an available on-phone media store is great and has helped me a few times while on-the-go, but it should not be the ONLY method of getting media onto a phone.
