DreamHost Getting Rid of Snapshot Backups

For those of you that host your web site using DreamHost, you might want to know that they are getting rid of the snapshot backups. I found this out the hard way when I needed to recover a site of mine that got hacked. I always thought this was an awesome feature and it’s one of the reasons I have stuck with DH for so long. If you lost a file, you could always grab it from the snapshot backup by going to the .snapshot directory.
DreamHost still has the feature where you can Restore a domain. This feature unfortunately didn’t work out for me though. I received a message from DH telling me there were no available backups and that I was responsible for them.

Unfortunately, all of the subsidiary companies that CrystaHost (of Canada) owns are doing this. Why don’t they offer snapshot it as an extra charge? They haven’t yet. I never got that.

It’s not so much that we’re intentionally getting rid of the feature specifically. Believe me, we love it as much as you guys do! Unfortunately, with our new system architecture we’re moving to, user accessible snapshots are not a possibility. We *do* have backups of your data, and there are snapshots on those backups, but we do not currently have a way for customers to access those. We will be investigating methods for doing that with as little pain as possible in the coming months, but it’s not something that’s currently high on our priority list.
