For People That Don’t Get Twitter…

Ask somebody to join Twitter and they will likely look at you like you have a spider crawling out of your nose. Chances are, they signed up for an account and never used it again. It’s because they are ‘Twitter challenged’. They may even tell you “Twitter is for twits”, mocking the people that use it in order to make themselves feel better about the fact that they just don’t get it.
It’s easy to not get Twitter though. I was even one of the people that didn’t get it. After trying it again and reading how others use it, I started to understand it better. Here’s a list of things you should know about Twitter and why it’s so great.
It’s not really about what you are doing right now
Sure, the box on Twitter asks “What are you doing?” but Twitter has become more than a stalker’s best friend. It’s used for people to share information. People use it to show others what they are reading, watching, experiencing. What is Morgan reading right now? Will I find it interesting?
It’s the quickest way to get information
Last week, District 9 debuted. I was one of the people to see the midnight show. I didn’t like it, but I wanted to see what others thought. Searching Twitter was the quickest way to see what normal people like myself thought of the movie. This week’s wait for the Boondock Saints 2 trailer to appear online is another example. A quick search of “Boondock trailer” on Twitter shows me a few people that believe it will be posted today. This is information I couldn’t find easily on Google.
It’s fun for events
A group of my friends Twittered during the MTV Movie Awards. It’s like having people in your living room watching TV with you. You might ask why you can’t do this in a chat room. You can, but Twitter enables your messsages to be searchable and allows others to find the conversation and chime in either live during the even or a year from now.
So give Twitter another try. Tweet often and join in on the conversation. It’s much more fun than a chat room.

Well, I fit in that category in a way… Until I started my blog, and really watched how you and others used it, I had started a twitter account but never used it. Now I find myself looking for more people!
Good post.

I have no intention of being a twit. Never have. Never will. Why are you “looking for more people”? Sounds like Jim Jones. Or someone suffering from extreme insecurity.

I tend to lean towards the side that don’t get it. Seriously how many ways do people need to stay connected. plus, unless i am wrong since I have not spent very long time with it you are sharing info with everyone that follows you. I mean jeesh you have rss feeds, blogs, myspace, facebook, linken, which can be tied into your smartphone, you have texting, and just pick the million of email accounts you have..which can be tied to your phone too.
people are becoming too disconnected, maybe that is cool if you are dealing with folks that don’t live close but how about pick up a phone or even go visit your friends to watch the mtv awards..just my thoughts though.

I’d say Twitter’s one of the best social networking tool for me, primarily because I can easily update everybody what I’m up to. Whether I’m trying out a new fancy restaurant, playing WoW or providing sensible reviews about the upcoming Aion and anything under the sun. Oh, did I mention that I have just hundreds of followers? I’m not competing with Ashton Kutcher by the way. LOL
