Video Game Market is Crashing Again

I was at GameStop the other day with money to spend. I picked up an Xbox 360, then looked around for a game to buy. I quickly realized that I was going to have to pony up over $300 for the experience. Even more if I wanted a headset, 2nd controller, etc. I simply cannot spend $60 for a game. it’s just not worth it. I’d rather buy a movie.

Instead I settled for a purchase of Wii Sports Resort, a $50 purchase (I already own a Wii). Then I got home and realized that I couldn’t play most of the games without a nunchuck and another WiiMotion Plus. My $50 purchase quickly became almost $100. This is exactly why the the gaming industry is suffering a crisis. Too many friggin peripherals that are too expensive and too many sub-par games that are also too expensive.

Why do you think the PS2 is still going strong? The system is cheap and you can get many killer titles for $20 and $30. Is it really worth it to spend double the money for some of these games? Granted that there are some stellar games that are with the $60, but I’ll buy 3 pretty good games for my PS2 instead. With the way it’s looking in this economy, many others seem to be doing the same.

I agree, I nearly flipped when I was at Fry’s and saw Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 4 and Tekken Tag all in the same box for $20. I have a Wii, but nothing beats smacking people in the face with Killik (I probably misspelled the name, oh well).

Yea I dont understand why the gaming industry wont lower their price in this economic downfall. 3 video games for one of the new systems can get you a ton.

I prefer gamecube considering they have some pretty good games

I agree with a lot of games not being worth 60 bucks. Luckily I have a capable enough PC that I can buy some of the games for that instead, and sometimes they are $20-$30 cheaper than they would have been for the XBOX 360.

I don’t even play console games anymore. I just built a good PC for $800 with the latest technology, and I just play my old PC games just fine, and even the new ones. For mobile gaming I just use my iPhone, the games on it are creative, great, and cheap. 99% of the games are sub-$10.

The great thing is, you don’t HAVE to buy all those friggin’ controllers to play games. All consoles come with one controller that plays all of the games you can throw at them with ease. Waiting about 3 weeks will garner you a good 25% off a new game (used), and a couple of months will show that new game at 50% or so.. unless it’s a “blockbuster” (read: moronic title everyone wants) and then you’ll have to stick with used or wait until it makes “Platinum hits” status.

Paying $60 for a game means you’re too impatient to wait and perhaps a PS2 is all you need since you lack impulse control. Chronicles of Riddick? $34. Hellboy? $15 for the 360 and PS3 respectively. Hardly a problem if you’re not trying to keep up with the Jones’.

Simple answer to this - pc gaming :)

Once you have the pc the games are much MUCH cheaper and the only peripherals you need is a mouse and keyboard.

So the “Video Game Market” isn’t crashing it is simply the console market that is crashing while the pc gaming market is boosting. This is the year for pc gaming and will remain that way till they reduce the console problems. They entice you in with cheap hardware then build up the cost with the expensive games, online play (live), controllers, dlc etc…
