Experts Question the Difference Between Sugar and Corn Syrup Drinks

For a couple of weeks now, I have been going out of my way to go to the gas station that serves Pepsi Throwback because I like the natural sugar recipe better. I just read about how so-called experts are questioning how consumers judge the difference. They are basically saying “If you think there is a difference in taste, you’re an idiot”.

I sat the bottles side by side and did a taste test. and found that these experts are right for the most part. The taste is pretty much the same. However, there is a huge difference between Pepsi and Pepsi Throwback. Regular Pepsi with HFCS in it tastes very syrupy. It’s much thicker and not as refreshing. I don’t know about you, but when I want a drink, I want to be refreshed. That’s why it’s called a refreshment. The last thing I want to drink is anything with syrup. Pepsi Throwback tastes a bit more like flavored water and isn’t as thick. It also doesn’t leave that gross film on your tounge.

If you can’t see the difference yourself, look at a bottle of Mountain Dew Throwback and regular Mountain Dew. The regular Mountain Dew is a cloudy mess compared to the Throwback version.

Flavor the same? Maybe. Different texture? Absolutely!

Sugar is poison. HFCS is lethal!

There is most definitely a difference in taste. Taste isn’t simply flavor, it’s feel in the mouth, aftertaste, the whole shebang. I’ll never forget the surprise at cracking open a Coke out of the minibar at my London hotel. Wow, that was some good stuff. I’ve since quit drinking soda of any kind, but if sugar-based Coke were to be marketed here in the US, I’d be very tempted to go back to my old ways, at least just a little bit.

The expert, probably deep in the pocket of ADM as is agnews, is not looking at triglyceride levels.

His argument basically boils down to, Look how cheap this is, and what difference does it make? It all turns into piss anyway!

The entire New Coke thing was about switching Sugar Coke to HFCS Coke Classic, because of early bottling contracts that prevented bottlers from USING alternative sweeteners because it affected the taste. When Cane Sugar prices affected the bottom line, Coke had to do something.

I agree that the difference is texture. I drink diet (splenda if I can) but not regular because of calories but also the horrible film I get on my teeth.

If you want original sugar-based Pepsi or Coke, load up on it every March/April at the kosher market. Kosher for Passover soda does not have any corn syrup. Jones Soda (which is bottled near you in Seattle) is also sugar-sweetened rather than HFCS, but it’s in glass bottles rather than cans, and I doubt it’s as cheap as the on-brand names.

I have yet to see the Throwback items in the local stores here in FL, but I will buy it when I can. When I visit my aunt in Texas, I always buy some bottles of Dr. Pepper from Dublin, TX. It is made to the early specs before corn syrup was used and while it tastes a little better, it is far less syrupy. I think oztech hit it on the nose about the syrup film from sodas.

I read labels, and if the label says HFCS or they spell it out, I refuse to buy the product.

I’ve written and e-mailed product companies about its use and their reply is always the same: “there are no more calories in HFCS than sugar”. then I have to reply that I’m 5 foot 9 inches and 148 pounds and I am not worried about calories, get rid of the HFCS!

I also read it doesn’t chemically fool the brain into thinking that you’ve had enough, so you eat and drink more of the junk.

So now I have given-up many products and I no longer buy Campbell’s Tomato soup which I use to love.

I haven’t had soda pop in years, but when Pepsi Throwback came out, I bought one 12 pack. I also notice the date on the bottom of the can and found its good for over 1 year, so I bought 2 more 12 packs. Since then I’ve drank 3 cans and gave 4 to the neighbor to try and they like it.

When its gone, its gone, I won’t start to drink or eat HFCS!

Don’t drink soda period!!!!!!!!!!!
