Circuit City Shut Down Will Hurt Best Buy

Best Buy may be one of the only electronics retailers left in your area since Circuit City is going away, but that’s not going to help them in the short term. Circuit City has $1.8 billion in inventory to unload at blockbuster prices. That’s gonna take a significant chunk out of Best Buy sales this year.

You know how they say competition is good for business? Well, Best Buy has nobody to drive them to be better now. Not that they were really all that great to begin with. The staff is lazy, the stock is usually messy throughout the stores, and the prices are often not as low as some might think. I used to drive between Best Buy and Circuit City to see who had the best prices. Circuit City used to win most of the time. People seem to believe Best Buy always has the better price for some reason. Maybe it’s because of the yellow tag logo that is often associated with lower prices.

With Circuity City gone, I believe most people will just give up on searching between stores and turn to online shopping from now on. It’s easier to get a better price, you don’t have to pay taxes most of the time, and it’s easier to find what you need.

Fortunately, here in California, we have more than those two choices. The last time I purchased anything in a Circuit City was in 1997, and I’ve only been in their stores 3 times since. Circuit City stores her in California have had that ‘were just about ready to announce bankruptcy’ look for over 3 years.

You’re right about Best Buy, but through my life I’ve found that a single source of supply doesn’t stay that way long - unless the supplied items are no longer wanted. Something will turn up, just as Circuit City sprang up after the chain stereo stores closed in the 80s.

The really good thing is that, at least for awhile, when something else comes in, those who run the entity tend to care about profits, and since they do, realize the need for customer service.

Actually you do have to pay taxes when shopping at online retailers that do not charge them at checkout. Or at least you are RESPONSIBLE for paying them. Don’t think the government can’t find out. Even though the chances are greater that they may not, there is also a chance that they will. And that may be years from now. And when that happens, you better believe that not only will they require the tax from the original purchase, but they will also tack on interest at the highest rate legally possible.

One phrase I want you to look up mike “Internet Tax Freedom Act’” you may find just how very wrong you are.

Yes, I’m very aware you are supposed to pay the taxes. Fact: People don’t. End of story. Also it comes in handy to not pay the tax when you make a purchase that you will end up writing off on your return.

Bill, if your state imposes a sales tax, then you are required to pay that sales tax on the item you purchased via the internet.

And oz, yeah I know the overwhelming majority of people don’t do it. But I’m assuming you are smart enough to know that if there’s anything the government loves getting their fat fingers on more than anything in this world, it’s money. So called “respected” government officials go out of their way on a daily basis to fleece the public so that they can line their own pockets. As a result, I don’t want to be the unlucky slob who one day gets audited for not declaring items purchased via the internet on my taxes. Anything is possible with the government. So no. It is most certainly not “End of story”.

Blockbuster sales? 10% off is not considered blockbuster in my book. I went to a CC near me which was actually about 30 miles away the parking lot was packed. I walked in there and everything was 10% off. Wow big deal I can get this 900 dollar HDTV now for 810.

Circuit City Blows. They ran themselves into the ground. I stopped going there years ago because of the hideously pushy sales people. I bought a car stereo there once and they smoked in my car while they installed it.

They are also guilty of the model number switcheroo whereby they honor competitor prices on the same model numbers but they switch all their model numbers so they are “different”. Home Depot does the same thing. Essentially it is never honored. I tried years ago to get them to honor a lower price on a tv from Sears (it was the same one) and they refused becasue they changed the model number. They can rot in the hell of their own creation.

I never liked Circuit City. They just seemed to “distant or stuffy,” in my opinion or experience.

I move around a lot, and hadn’t seen a Best Buy in over a decade.

We now have one nearby, in Maine. I’ve only been there twice.

I prefer Walmart these days.

I haven’t shopped at either Best Buy or CC since about 99-2000 when i discovered “Newegg”. I always build my own systems and they beat out the “box” stores by far on componets.

And who in their right mind pays $40-$50 dollars for a cable at Best Buy when they can get it for $15 online even with shipping costs?

Let’s see here:

Best Buy: Sucks.
Circuit City: Sucks.

Why do they suck? Their prices are high; their sales staff are rude, lazy, and have almost NO knowledge of the products they are selling - and they pressure you most of the time to buy things you don’t want or need; their product selection sucks most of the time, and if by chance they aren’t sold out or just don’t plain carry what you want, what they do have is so expensive it’s not worth the money - did I mention that earlier?; Oh, and usually, everything is in such disarray in either of those stores, that it is difficult to find what you are looking for.

THE ONLY REASON I ever go to either of those stores is if I have to have something right then to fix a problem. If I can at all possibly wait, then I will buy online - never from them.

Circuit City: Good riddance. Hopefully, Best Buy will follow soon!

The only way I buy now: New Egg, Tiger Direct (sometimes) or the local Mom & Pop computer store down the street!

hmm, Bill, you might want to look it up yourself, the internet tax freedom act is about not taxing internet access, not internet purchases. They do ban multiple taxes, so you don’t have to pay tax both for the retailers state and yours, but you do still have to pay state tax for your state, you do it with your income taxes, there’s a line for it on the forms. Sure it’s unlikely that you would get caught not paying, but if you do get audited, The burden will be on you to prove that you paid the taxes on your purchases.

One problem I see here, is Bill will likely not look at these comments again.

Where I live we’ve never had Circuit City. I live in California for a few years and they seem OK. I would rarely ever go into BestBuy unless I really needed it now.

When times got tough last year, I worked at BestBuy. I liked most of the people I worked with, except for a “senior” that felt I wasn’t selling enough service plans. That’s where all the money they make is … service plans, credit card sign-ups and cellphone upgrades.

They loose money when they sell a $400 laptop and get pissed off when the customer doesn’t buy the $300 service plan or the $150 antivirus/spyware/optimization.

And yes cables - $40 for a usb cable. I had a customer tell me they could one at the local supermarket for $9.99. Sure enough, I looked and they were right.

I think the service plan might be worth it if you are buying a $1200 laptop and plan to use it for three years.

BestBuy is in business to help people that don’t know anything about electronics and have no one to help them.

A number of years ago I worked for Best Buy, and one day while printing up signs to display, I found two different tech support price lists (Now geek squad). One list for stores with a nearby CompUSA and the other was for stores with out (the one with out the CompUSA had the higher prices.

I am lucky to have a Fry’s Electronics only eight miles from my home, which has a much better selection then Best Buy ever could.

Also, I was in my old Best Buy store last week (First time since I left) and the computer selection had been radically reduced down to just those items most likely to sell…even the software selection had seen a 90% reduction in size

Say what you will about Circut City and Best Buy most of the negative comments I have read are true. However lets remember that the tradgedy here is while the brick and mortar stores continue to dissappear so do jobs. Our economy is in a huge transformation and we really need to understand how difficult this transformation is going to be on so many of us. I hope our government will wake up and give huge tax credits to stores that maintain a presence in local economies. Bussiness on the other hand needs to have a strong online presence along with their retail outlets.

I think I have been to Circuit City once in the last ten yrs…and didn’t buy anything there..As for BestBuy, I have bought a Digital Movie camera, Sony Hard Drive model…and DVD’s when they are on sale.Other then that, they suck also. I find my best deals online,,,,and before long Bestbuy will be going the Circuit City Route…because a $100.00 off a already over priced item such as a HDTV is no sale at all. CompUSA is ABOUT GONE, at least from my area. Best Buy gone, closing stores within ONE YEAR

You guys are idiots as far as I’m concerned best buy it’s the greatest place too shop but it’s one of the best no the prices aren’t always low but they gave better products as for the sales floor they could really use some help in some stores, as for geeksquad you should be charged 100 to 350 dollars to have your computer fixed or put together if you can’t read or understand computer jargon! People be realistic here I could say that bmw charging me 900 to change the brakes on my car is a rip off off but do I know how too do it….. No and I want quality work so I pay you guys need to understand that yeah you found a cable on line cheper whoo hoooo but some people are not that smart and the need help and they have to pay for it!

Every one of you ignorant idiots doesn’t realize thta if you buy stuff online all the time eventually it is going to catch up with you. There are more scams on the internet than there are in any retail store in the world. You can walk into a best buy, or target, or walmart, and actually play with or look at something prior to buying it. Oh and I forgot to mention the fact that all the people in bestbuy stores are trained in whatever department they work in, I even found out that they have to take tests to be certified in what they are working with every month. And to the idiot who thinks bestbuy will be gone in a year, you are retarded, bestbuy is the most powerful electronics retailer ever created, and I know for fact that they are always looking for ways to improve helping customers. So before all you idiots rant and rave about dumb shit, DO RESEARCH, BE SMART ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. JUST BECAUSE ONETIME YOU WALKED INTO A STORE AND HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE DOESN’T MEAN IT WILL HAPPEN EVERY TIME. BESTBUY RULES AND ITS EMPLOYEES WILL ALWAYS TRY TO HELP YOU THE BEST THEY CAN, PLUS THEY MATCH THE MAJORITY OF THE “LOWER PRICES”.
GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE YYOU DUMBASS PEOPLE FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO THEN RANT ABOUT SOMETHING AS DUMB AS THIS STUPID SHIT………………….but I had a great time ranting.
