Why Aren’t Certain Nintendo Wii Games Multiplayer?

I remember when I was young. I used to sit in the floor with my NES and play Super Mario Bros. 3 with a friend. We would play in 2 player mode and switch off between levels, one being Luigi, the other Mario (I always had to be Mario). It was so much fun to play this game with a friend. Now I see the Mario games coming out for the Wii and they don’t have a true 2 player mode. How hard is it to add Luigi to the game Nintendo!?!?
I don’t know how many times I’ve been to the store to find a good multiplayer game that 2 players can play and failed to find anything. The new Wario Shake It game looks cool, but it’s only one player. What is my girlfriend gonna do while I play? Just watch? Sure we could switch off between levels, but it’s really not as fun as if you had your own score and character.
Another beef I have with Nintendo is that they screwed up the buttons on the classic games that are available on the virtual console. I downloaded Super Mario Bros 3. and the button configuration is jacked. It just doesn’t have the same feel with the classic controller as the real NES controller. You can’t reconfigure the buttons to your liking either either.
The Nintendo Wii is a great system, but the system and many of the games lack the features that you would think would be available by default in a 7th generation system.
