Roomba: A Must Have If You Have Pets

I bought a Roomba this weekend. I am thrilled! My geeky robot side is completely satisfied. As a bonus, I have a clean floor. My hardwood floor gets filled with dog hair on an hourly basis. The hair, crumbs and other items make it unpleasant to walk around the house bare foot. I can always feel things sticking to the bottom of my feet even after I have swept well.

After one run with the Roomba, my floor feels almost medically clean. I had just swept, yet the thing was filled with all kinds of things it found on my floor. It even managed to pick up 2 screws and a quarter. I have yet to test it on carpet, but I’m sure I will be satisfied.

Please let me know about the carpet results. I have a carpeted house, two pets, and two long-haired people. We have killed more vacuums than most households. My theory is that hair gets wrapped around the beater bar, requiring frequent stops to remove it and wearing belts and motors.

Thanks and good luck!

I have already encountered a few long hairs mixed into the Roomba. I think a Roomba would work better in situations where there is long hair because you can easily access the bottom of the device and clean off any hairs that may have gotten tangled. There is an included cleaning tool that makes unclogging the it really easy.

I too would love to hear the results on how well your Roomba does with carpet…

I have hesitated to get a Roomba because I worry that my Malamute would consider it to be a chew toy. A very expensive, self-propelled chew toy. Has anyone encountered this sort of problem? I would imagine it scares the snot out of smaller pets and gets destroyed by larger ones.

I had a roomba that worked very well on carpet. I had to give it up because 1 of my cats enjoyed turning it on and riding it about 3 in the morning. do you know how loud it is at 3 AM.

One of the funniest things I’ve ever read is this woman’s account of her new Roomba and the effect on her cats: http://tomatonation.com/?p=844.
