It’s Time to Take Action Against Those That Steal Your Blog Content

I’m sick of it. Just so sick of these blogs that spring up and steal content. All of my sites have had tons of content stolen including this blog here at LockerGnome. It’s time to do something about it. All of us need to start taking action every time we see our content has been stolen. There are some good tips on how to do this here.

Right now I have a problem with this site. I have tried to find his email address, but his WHOIS information is private. I was able to find the IP address of his web site though, which then led me to who was hosting his site. Turned out it was Google. Luckily Google has a procedure you can follow to file an infringment claim. I will be faxing them the information today and hopefully something will be done.

Take action now bloggers, or the problem will only get worse. If anybody needs assistance with finding out how to locate the host of an offending web site, feel free to leave a comment on this blog.

I actually wrote one of them, and asked if they would at least include a link to my blog, since they were posting it illegally, and they did. I figure in a way, it is more advertisement.
It is a pretty overwhelming challenge you are looking at there, I am on quite a few of these sites myself. In my case, as long as my message gets out there, it’s all gravy to me. You can’t really make any money doing this, so I figure it really doesn’t matter.

And of course it’s not just blog content that gets stolen all the time.

I have a website called ‘Old Abandoned Buildings of Northern NY’  http://oabonny.co.cc) that brings in moderate traffic to those interested in old structures and such (Urban Exploration goes along with it, which also brings interest).

It’s amazing how many people steal my pictures, and sometimes the text content. It’s equally amazing how some people think nothing of it and either are actually pissy to me about it, or out-right attack me when I politely contact them.

The funny thing is I’d be happy to allow people to post my pics as long as they asked first and credited my website or something. I mean, it’s just polite.

Is it worth the effort if you cannot sue them for copyright infringement and get a big settlement? I used to chase down thieves. They don’t care. They know the effort I make will result in no pain for them. They are right. The bold will go where you don’t want them and laugh in your face when confronted. Have a less stressful day, Tom

I have dealt with the problem of the offenders not caring too. In this case, I’m going straight to the host. Most host providers will review the case and take down stolen content. If you check that link now, my stolen content was already taken down. He could’ve had his entire blog removed by Google if he failed to do so. That at least is some sort of pain.

There are times thought when the hosts don’t care. In those cases you’re right. There is little you can do.

It’s a shame that we as bloggers have to put up with this. It’s to easy to steal content online unlike old media where there is a hard copy and proof.

I like to have my information out there; where ever that might be but it’s a waste to me without credit. We feel your pain!

I don’t have much use for Google’s takeover of all content in the world, copyright be damn, but they did remove the offending blogger so it appears that your effort had some success.

I don’t want any big money settlement, Tom - I just want them to stop taking my pics without asking or providing a link back.

And as someone else said; going to a host or even an ISP will eventually do the job, just a pain in the ass. But I believe it’s worth it.

After all, if someone doesn’t stand up for our rights we won’t have any…
