I Made Fun of a Retarded Guy

I complain about other people a lot in this blog. People can be stupid sometimes. So it’s only fair that I let myself have it sometimes.  A few weeks back, I was at a gas station filling up my car with gas. While the gas was pumping, my girlfriend and I were giggling about a joke I made. I was dancing around in the parking lot and acting like a fool. The gas station attendant looked perplexed and kept staring at us. We looked back wondering what in the world this guys problem was. We sarcastically waved at him, giggling about how he must think we’re out to cause trouble at the local gas station. We joked how he must feel his job is important, watching over his gas station and making minimum wage. As we left, the guy strangely stared at us the entire way out of the parking lot as the strange experience finally ended.

Two weeks later, I went into the gas station to buy some ice. The same guy that was staring at us strangely that night was working the counter. While waiting in line it became clear, the guy was mentally challenged. I felt like a total zero at that moment. Here I assumed the guy was just an overzealous gas station attendant. Now he was a hero.

I’m going to hell. Bring on the comments.

Been there done that. There is nothing worse then the moment when it all clicks and you realize that person is mentally challenged.

I think we have all been there and done that in some form or fashion. The important thing to notice here is that you learned from your mistake and taught yourself an important lesson. Always make sure you are looking at all possibilities before you truly pass judgement, which we really shouldn’t be doing anyways. As far as I can tell, none of us are perfect.
