Planning to Sell Your SUV, Mini-van or Truck? Good Luck!

Yesterday I spoke with a car dealer about how car sales are going. Of course she said they are terrible. We discussed hybrids and smaller cars and how those are the only things that sell right now. She said if you’re trying to sell or trade in an SUV, mini-van or large truck, you’re not gonna get much for it. With gas prices, nobody wants to drive around a gas guzzler.

I personally never understood the need for an SUV or mini-van unless you have a job that requires it. You can fit 3 kids the the back of a Toyota Corolla just fine. Why do you need all the extra space just because you have kids?

If you have a smaller car though, you’re in luck. The values are as high as ever. I experienced this first hand when I sold my old 1998 Chevy Cavalier. The thing had a dent in the side, air conditioning was out, and over 130,000 miles on it. The dealership bought it from me for $1,200. I didn’t even expect to get $500 for the thing.

Until I had kids, I never understand the need for a vehicle larger than a Toyota Corolla. It’s not just your kids that you need to tote around … it’s their STUFF … and their friends … and their friends stuff … you can only fit so much in the trunk … =)

Kind of funny, kids nowadays just have too much stuff. I was in 6th grade before we could afford to unstuff ourselves out of the cab my dad’s F100 pickup. Yes, you can fit 3 children and parents into the cab, though the bed can carry a lot of stuff. Toyota Corollas were a bit smaller then, but would have been an upgrade in available interior space.

Still have the truck, it’s hauled considerable tons of hay, firewood, gravel, sand and building materials since 1968. I even overhauled the engine 12 years ago. Couldn’t see spending $23,000 at the time for a newer model to replace it. Was $2300 brand new and in the days when heaters were optional, it came with one.

Try towing a 25 foot boat with the Corolla and you’ll get some idea of why some of us need big SUVs.
