Why We Need to Get Off Oil

I watched Robert Kennedy Jr. on Letterman recently, and I liked what he had to say about why we have to do something about the environment. One of his main points was related to Sweden and their goal to be oil free by 2020. Since starting the program, the Sweden economy has been soaring. Iceland did the same and is reaping rewards. California is our most environmentally aware state and their economy is by far the strongest. Here is the clip from Letterman.

The refining of oil for internal combustion engines will be easily done, it just takes will. On the other hand, some oil will get used as a lubricant in those same ‘oil-free’ cars until many more castor beans are grown!

Please understand I *WANT* fuel efficient cars and minivans, but the Baaken Oil Formation in North Dakota has plenty of oil in an area that could be environmentally-clean used. Bio-diesel is another great place using algae, but it will take a few years to gear up commercially.
So long as we have spineless, clueless politicians as Speaker of the House (April 26, 2007 comment), the Senate, and President (and the three front-runners for President are actually worse!!!), genuine people like us will suffer.
I want a new “Manhattan Project”. Oil exploration and refining, bio-fuels for transportation, wind/solar/tide/water/nuclear stationary generators (I’m in the USA wind capital), hyper-efficient vehicle research (including electric), and LED houselights (to get rid of mercury laden CF bulbs).
Is anyone with genuine power listening. I thought not…
