Never Sell or Throw Away Your Old Video Games and Systems

I recently rediscovered many of the NES and SNES games that I loved as a kid by using emulators on my PC. The experience brought back many memories. So when I spotted an NES at a garage sale recently, I jumped at the chance to buy it along with a few games. I hooked it up, and found myself playing Super Mario Bros. 3 for hours. It made me wish that I had all of my old games and systems back. I sold them many years ago for a fraction of what my parents paid for them all.
Sure you can play all of the games on your PC, but there is just something about hooking that system up to the television and using the original system with the original controllers that makes the experience so nostalgic. It’s just not the same on the PC. So I am rebuilding my inventory of NES games so I can enjoy the nostalgia and one day share it with my kids.
So unless you’re really strapped for cash, save your PS2 and your original XBox or any other consoles and games you might own. Sure they will take up closet space, and you probably won’t touch them for 10 years, but the day will come when you might want to play Metal Gear Solid 2 again.

I’d have to agree to a point. We have our original NES and it still works (with the wonderful messing around with cartridges of course). Personally, I like being able to get the VC games on our Wii - it’s easier than trying to hook up the original console and works without needing to swap anything. Of course, the selection is noticeably more limited, but still has a lot of good titles. Besides, no messing around with cartridges not reading.
I definitely agree that hooking up to the TV and using the original controllers just works better than trying to mess around with an emulator and some random PC game controller. Sure there are adapters to use the older controllers on a PC, but there’s still something satisfying about playing on the TV as opposed to a computer screen.
Good thoughts and probably one of the reasons I still have that original NES console (as well as an original 2600 and Coleco system somewhere). Never got the mid-gen consoles, though I was tempted by the PS2 and still am a little. Happy with my Wii, overall. Really waiting for good 3rd party games and not really bad ports or games that companies throw out hoping people will buy. Make a good game, we’ll buy. Make a bad game, don’t complain that there’s no market on the Wii because people won’t buy bad games.

Yes, those old games will have nostalgia value for you. But for your kids, they’ll just be boring and dorky (and they’ll have some new word for “dorky”).

Every 10 years or so, I still pull out my 30-odd year old “pong” game. Remarkable to suddenly be back in the world of black-and-white blocks!
There’s nothing wrong with nostalga.
