Does Your Cell Phone Company Track Where You Go?

Were you aware that many of the modern cell phones today are capable of tracking your every move? The technology used is called triangulation where cell phone companies can compile data about your whereabouts even when you are not on a call by using 3 cellular phone towers to measure the distance your cell phone is from each tower.
I disabled location tracking on my LG phone by navigating to Menu > Settings & Tools > Phone Settings > Location. I have the option of setting it to E911 only, which will allow me to be tracked in the case of an emergency if I dial 911, or Location On. In other brand phones you should be able to find this setting in a similar location. I was shocked to find this setting enabled by default on my phone.

Actually, that setting will not prevent the ability to triangulate your location. Your mobile device will pull from towers as long as you have it on (unless you have it on “flight mode”). However, companies (at least at&t) do not pro actively track your location, it is limited to law enforcement with the proper authority.

According to a news report by WGNTV in Chicago, cell phone companies do track as long as that setting is enabled and they use it for marketing purposes. It was on a television newscast. I wish they posted a link.
