XP: Make Icons Load Faster

You know when Windows sits there chugging away and your desktop icons haven’t loaded yet? I learned about a setting that speeds this process up quite a bit.

1. Open My Computer.

2. Click on Tools and select Folder Options…

3. Click Folder Options select the View tab.

4. Uncheck the very first box that reads “Automatically search for network folders and printers”.

5. Click OK

If I use shared folders on another computer, what will happen if I turn off this option?

Windows will no longer go out and search for newly added network resources. In other words, it won’t update My Network Places on its own. You can still access the resources though. It’s a setting that probably wouldn’t be wise to change if you are in a large network environment that is constantly changing.

What Do You Think?
