<p>He has been making the journey for so long that all First Bus drivers have now been told to look out for him to ensure he gets off at the right stop.</p>
<p>Susan Finden (Corr), 65, a care worker who is Casper&#8217;s owner, said: &#8220;Casper has always disappeared for hours at a time but I never understood where he was going.</p>
<p>&#8220;Casper is quite quick for his age so he just hops on to the bus before the doors close. He catches the 10.55am service and likes to sit on the back seat.&#8221;</p>
<p>Rob Stonehouse (corr), one of the drivers on the route, said: &#8220;He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between people&#8217;s legs but he never causes any trouble.&#8221;</p>
<p>Casper has travelled an estimated 20,000 miles but Mrs Finden says because he is getting old the drivers often have to shuffle him off at the right stop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The last time I posted here the country was already crowning Obama as the reincarnation of Kennedy, or is it FDR? He was being proclaimed as the savior of America. Even moderate Republicans were beginning to wax hopeful.</p>
<p>Since then we&#8217;ve been jolted back to reality. Obama isn&#8217;t a god, he&#8217;s not even a Kennedy Democrat.</p>
<p>Recently he&#8217;s reaffirmed, strengthened really, the concept that the people don&#8217;t necessarily need to know what the government&#8217;s up to. His interpretation of &#8220;transparency in government&#8221; is rather opaque. The Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement is terrible legislation, Obama&#8217;s sided with the recording industry in the matter of fines and he dismissed out-of-hand the idea that the country would reconsider the legalization, taxation and control of marijuana. Any fear that he was going to be too liberal have been lain to rest. It appears he isn&#8217;t really liberal much at all.</p>
<p>So to all of those of you who worshiped Obama without critical thought last year, what are your thoughts now? Has your god died? Or are we beginning to get a view of the wizard behind the curtain?</p>

<p>In the last 40 years we&#8217;ve witnessed a government that has no idea how to deal with protest and disagreement. It&#8217;s almost as if the politicians have forgotten what Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independance:</p>
<blockquote><p>We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.</p>
<p>That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. <blockquote><p>The former Army scientist who was the prime suspect in the deadly 2001 anthrax mailings agreed Friday to take $5.82 million from the government to settle his claim that the Justice Department and the FBI invaded his privacy and ruined his career.</p>
<p>Dr. Steven J. Hatfill, 54, who was called a &#8220;person of interest&#8221; in the case by then-Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft in 2002, said that label and repeated leaks of investigative details to the media damaged his reputation.</p>
<p>For months in the anxious atmosphere after Sept. 11, Hatfill was subjected to 24-hour surveillance and was widely identified as the leading suspect in the nation&#8217;s first bioterrorism attack. However, he was never arrested or charged and a federal judge presiding over his lawsuit said recently that there &#8220;is not a scintilla of evidence&#8221; linking him to the mailings.</p>
<p>Former federal prosecutors knowledgeable about the investigation said the government payout to Hatfill signified that, in all likelihood, he would never be charged.</p>
<p>A spokesman for the Justice Department said the anthrax case &#8220;remains among the department&#8217;s highest law enforcement priorities.&#8221; Brian Roehrkasse also said in a statement that by agreeing to settle the lawsuit, the government &#8220;does not admit to any violation of the Privacy Act and continues to deny all liability in connection with Dr. Hatfill&#8217;s claims.&#8221;</p>
<p>The settlement calls for an immediate $2.82-million payment to Hatfill. Beginning in 2009, the government will pay Hatfill an annuity of $150,000 a year for 20 years, according to court papers.</p>
<p>Another lawyer for Hatfill, Mark A. Grannis, said Friday: &#8220;If anybody in the country really knew what it was like to be Steven Hatfill for the past six years, nobody would trade places with him.&#8221; Grannis faulted &#8220;a handful of credulous reporters,&#8221; who he said published or broadcast government leaks of &#8220;gossip, speculation and misinformation.&#8221;</p>
<p>The lawsuit was filed in August 2003, but U.S. District Court Judge Reggie B. Walton delayed permitting Hatfill&#8217;s lawyers to question FBI and Justice officials or news reporters for two more years. The government contended that the depositions of agents and FBI leaders could interfere with the investigation.</p>
<p>At that hearing, Walton ordered attorneys for the government and for Hatfill to try to settle the case. On Feb. 19, he signaled that he saw the government&#8217;s pursuit of Hatfill as questionable. The judge had reviewed four still-secret FBI memos about the status of the anthrax investigation.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is not a scintilla of evidence that would indicate that Dr. Hatfill had anything to do with this,&#8221; Walton said.</p>
<p>Rep. Rush D. Holt (D-N.J.), whose district includes Princeton, where anthrax spores were recovered from a mailbox, said the government&#8217;s payout to Hatfill confirmed that the investigation &#8220;was botched from the very beginning.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The FBI did a poor job of collecting evidence, and then inappropriately focused on one individual as a suspect for too long, developing an erroneous &#8216;theory of the case&#8217; that has led to this very expensive dead end,&#8221; Holt said in a statement.</p></blockquote>
<p>We just don&#8217;t seem to be doing very well in our expensive and protracted &#8220;War on Terrorism&#8221;. Saddam was captured through the efforts on troops on the ground, not as the result of all our intelligence and hardware. Osama is still at large. The government is being forced by the courts to deal with the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay when it seems they&#8217;d rather just leave them there and forget about them.</p>
<p>On every front in this &#8220;war&#8221; the government appears to be inept and unable to properly prosecute those it holds responsible, in the few cases where they even have suspects. They&#8217;ve made no inroads in their stated goal to make the world a safer place. If there really is a War on Terror, we&#8217;re losing it.</p>

<p>This tells me that while the management of GoDaddy may have good intentions and want their company to perform as advertised, they haven&#8217;t realized that at the customer experience level.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve worked in the customer service field in one way or another for over 21 years, most of that time in management.  It&#8217;s great to have noble plans and ambitions, but if they aren&#8217;t implemented in the real world, down at the customer experience level, they&#8217;re worthless.  I also understand the concept of sell-up.  I should have been encouraged to renew my domain even if it weren&#8217;t in need of renewing yet.  The whole point of sales is to sell as much as possible.  Every time a sales rep calls a customer to sell or renew a previous sale, they need to offer every reasonable item they can.</p>
<p>GoDaddy may have the right idea at the top, now it needs to filter that philosophy and best practices down to the sales teams.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At first I wasn&#8217;t sure if GoDaddy was incompetent or purposely negligent.  I&#8217;m still not sure.  I am sure of one thing, though; a domain I&#8217;ve owned since 2005 has been sold out from under me.</p>
<p>I was contacted by GoDaddy sales a couple of months ago to renew my hosting plan.  My hosting plan included one domain.  I agreed to a one year renewal for $107, received no conformation but found the receipt in my control panel.</p>
<p>What the sales rep never mentioned was that the renewal did not include domain reregistration, nor was I reminded by phone or email  to renew my domain.  I thought the whole package had been renewed.  Not so.  My hosting plan was renewed while my domain was quickly sold to another person.  Why he&#8217;d want a domain with marginal traffic and an obscure Swedish word as the URL I can&#8217;t imagine.  No matter, I was now in possession of a $107 hosting plan that hosted no domain.</p>
<p>Was I pissed off?  You bet.  Am I justified in my disappointment with GoDaddy sales for not also encouraging me to renew my domain at the same time I renewed the hosting plan.  I think so.   What good is a hosting plan without a domain?  Would any reasonable sales rep think I wanted to host nothing for a hundred bucks?  Are they that stupid?  It seems so.  I can only surmise their greed, getting me to renew the more expensive package while not caring about the less profitable domain renewal, overrode their common sense.</p>
<p>At least they are refunding the hosting payment.  And to give him his due, the rep I spoke with on the phone couldn&#8217;t have been nicer or more efficient.  His customer service skills are being wasted there.</p>
<p>As a final insult, they sent me a survey after I canceled the hosting plan.  I answered honestly.  Was I pleased with their service?  Not at all.  Would I consider using GoDaddy to host my sites in the future?  No.  Would I recommend GoDaddy to my friends and associates?  Never.</p>
<p>I do however recommend&nbsp;<a href="http://1and1.com" title="http://1and1. " target="_blank">1and1.com</a>.  I&#8217;ve never had an issue with them in the 3 years they&#8217;ve hosted my other domains.  As for that other company, I think I may start referring to them as Go(tohell)Daddy.  That seems to be their attitude toward their customers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;ve got two controversial movies hitting the theaters this month, <em>The Golden Compass</em> and <em>Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed</em>.</p>
<p><em> The Golden Compass </em>is being called a subversive attempt to spread atheism among children. Many churches are urging their members to abstain from viewing it.</p>
<blockquote><p>Based on the first book of a trilogy called His Dark Materials by acclaimed English author and self-professed atheist Philip Pullman, the movie stars Nicole Kidman and features a little girl&#8217;s quest to kill God.<br />
According to Fox News, the novelist has said his books are in response to C.S. Lewis&#8217; series The Chronicles of Narnia, which he has called &#8220;one of the most ugly and poisonous things&#8221; he&#8217;s ever read. &#8220;I hate [the 'Narnia' books] with a deep and bitter passion, with their view of childhood as a golden age from which sexuality and adulthood are a falling away,&#8221; said Pullman.<br />
&#8220;They&#8217;re intentionally watering down the most offensive element,&#8221; said Bill Donohue, president and CEO of the Catholic League. &#8220;It&#8217;s a deceitful stealth campaign.&#8221;<br />
The fear is that unsuspecting parents will view the movie and find it intriguing and innocent enough to purchase the books for their children. (The books are at the top of best-seller lists in the U.K and other countries but are not as popular in the U.S.)<br />
In recent weeks, e-mails have been circulating within religious circles calling on people of faith to boycott the movie. Much like efforts before the release of the &#8220;Da Vinci Code&#8221; movie, which turned out to be a huge worldwide box-office hit, the protests against this film have been loud and aggressive. The controversy is undoubtedly drumming up free publicity for Pullman&#8217;s works. (In fact, the rumpus drove me to purchase the books so I could make my own assessment.)<br />
Without actually seeing the movie, it is impossible to draw a fair conclusion. Parents should be aware that religious and atheist groups alike seem to agree that the film is far less provocative than the books.  (<a href="http://www.sltrib.com/faith/ci_7603939">Source</a>)</p></blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, Ben Stein wants to become the new poster-boy for the ID movement. In <em>Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed</em> Stein claims that &#8220;big science&#8221; has suppressed the teaching of Intelligent Design in the science classroom.</p>
<blockquote><p> In the movie, Stein, who is also a lawyer, economist, former presidential speechwriter, author and social commentator, is stunned by what he discovers – an elitist scientific establishment that has traded in its skepticism for dogma. Even worse, say publicists for the feature film, &#8220;along the way, Stein uncovers a long line of biologists, astronomers, chemists and philosophers who have had their reputations destroyed and their careers ruined by a scientific establishment that allows absolutely no dissent from Charles Darwin&#8217;s theory of random mutation and natural selection.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Big Science in this area of biology has lost its way,&#8221; says Stein. &#8220;Scientists are supposed to be allowed to follow the evidence wherever it may lead, no matter what the implications are. Freedom of inquiry has been greatly compromised, and this is not only anti-American, it&#8217;s anti-science. It&#8217;s anti-the whole concept of learning.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;Expelled&#8221; documents how teachers and scientists alike are being ridiculed daily, denied tenure and even fired believing there is evidence of &#8220;design&#8221; in nature and challenging the current orthodoxy that life is entirely a result of random chance.</p>
<p>For example, Stein meets Richard Sternberg, a double Ph.D. biologist who allowed a peer-reviewed research paper describing the evidence for intelligence in the universe to be published in the scientific journal Proceedings. Shortly after publication, officials from the National Center for Science Education and the Smithsonian Institution, where Sternberg was a research fellow, began a coordinated smear-and-intimidation campaign to get the promising young scientist fired. The attack on scientific freedom was so egregious that it prompted a congressional investigation.</p>
<p>In the film, Stein meets other scientists like astrobiologist Guillermo Gonzalez, who was denied tenure at Iowa State University in spite of an extraordinary record of achievement. Gonzalez made the mistake of documenting the design he has observed in the universe. And there are others, like Caroline Crocker, a brilliant biology teacher at George Mason University who was forced out of the university for briefly discussing problems with Darwinian theory and for telling the students that some scientists believe there is evidence of design in the universe.  (<a href="http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=57840">Source</a>)</p></blockquote>
<p>No more &#8220;It&#8217;s a Wonderful Life&#8221; or &#8220;Charlie Brown Christmas&#8221;. It appears this year we&#8217;re to spend our holiday movie viewing time questioning our fundamental beliefs. I&#8217;m almost surprised Mel Gibson didn&#8217;t release a movie questioning the right to abortion centered around the birth of Christ.</p>
<p>So, who&#8217;s going, which one will you watch, why (or why not)? Or are you going to pass on the whole thing and just watch &#8220;Miracle on 34th Street&#8221; for the umpteenth time?</p>

Have we created such an atmosphere of fear and xenophobia that no foreigner is safe traveling to the West any more?  Do we need to disarm airport security people to prevent another lethal application of taser usage?  &#8220;Don&#8217;t tase me, bro&#8221; was mildly humorous.  I find nothing funny about the following incident.</p>
<blockquote><p>VANCOUVER — Dazed and confused after more than 15 hours of travel, unable to communicate in English and scared because he couldn&#8217;t find his mother, Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski was jolted by a taser just 24 seconds after being confronted by police in Vancouver International Airport.</p>
<p>That allegation was made Thursday by a lawyer for Mr. Dziekanski&#8217;s family who says video evidence will show that the RCMP took him down with a taser jolt moments after approaching him.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been in touch with witnesses. I have viewed a video, which was taken by a bystander, which is not going to be released until at least the time of the inquest. From my observation, the interaction between the police and this individual, who didn&#8217;t appear to me to be posing a danger to anybody at the time … was 24 seconds, roughly, before he was tasered,&#8221; Walter Kosteckyj said, adding the airport surveillance videos also won&#8217;t likely be released until an inquest is held.</p>
<p>A CTV News report Thursday night, based on emergency radio logs, shows police arrived at the scene at 1:28 a.m. and, two minutes later, it was reported a &#8220;male has been tasered.&#8221;</p>
<p>The radio log does not indicate when police first approached Mr. Dziekanski, just that he was down two minutes after they arrived — and that by 1:32 he had lost consciousness.</p>
<p>CTV reported there was a 12-minute delay before medical help arrived. Mr. Dziekanski died shortly after being tasered — only 10 hours after arriving in the country that was to be his new home.</p>
<p>Asked to describe what he saw on the video, Mr. Kosteckyj replied: &#8220;I would describe it as something that will be shown to police academies around North America as not the way to intervene in this kind of situation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Police have described a much more measured response in which officers gave a wildly agitated Mr. Dziekanski two jolts from a taser just to subdue him long enough to put handcuffs on him. The RCMP say they too have videos, but they can&#8217;t be released because an investigation is under way.</p>
<p>Mr. Dziekanski died not far from dramatic Coast Salish totemic &#8220;welcome figures&#8221; that had greeted him at the entrance to the Arrivals Hall several hours earlier.</p>
<p>Mr. Kosteckyj described how a journey to a new life devolved into a nightmarish scenario, in which Mr. Dziekanski was left wandering helpless and alone in a busy airport while his mother, Zofia Cisowski, was searching for him nearby.</p>
<p>The waiting mother and increasingly frantic son were separated by glass walls and what appears to be impenetrable airport bureaucracy that somehow failed to help them connect.</p>
<p>&#8220;Unbelievably, these people were probably no more than 150 to 200 feet apart for at least five hours, and she was unable to get any message to him. And no one on the other side [of the glass walls] thought to interview him or come outside or vice versa,&#8221; Mr. Kosteckyj said.</p>
<p>He said he could not explain why no one was able to come to the assistance of Mr. Dziekanski in an airport that handles 17 million visitors a year.</p>
<p>&#8220;For all the high-tech stuff they have at the airport, and all the security they have, somehow a guy can sit or be in that baggage area, that immigration area, for a period of nine hours … without anyone really taking much notice of him — as unbelievable as that sounds,&#8221; Mr. Kosteckyj said.</p>
<p>He said Mr. Dziekanski&#8217;s journey to Canada began in Poland about 3 a.m., when he left his home town of Pieszyce to get to an airport for his first airplane flight. The 40-year-old construction worker, who had never left Poland before, was immigrating to Canada to join his mother, 61, who lives in Kamloops, about a five-hour drive from Vancouver.</p>
<p>They had arranged to meet at the baggage carousel in the international terminal at YVR. What neither of them seemed to know, however, was that the baggage area is inside a secure area just past Canada Customs and Immigration. There is no line of sight into the Arrivals Hall from the public waiting area, except for a short distance through sliding glass doors.</p>
<p>Mr. Dziekanski arrived at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.</p>
<p>&#8220;He made his way to primary customs in the ordinary fashion … he went through there in the normal time frame … he then proceeded through and was directed to secondary customs, which is normal for someone who doesn&#8217;t speak English and is immigrating to the country,&#8221; Mr. Kosteckyj said. His papers were in order and he proceeded without difficulty.</p>
<p>But what happened after that was far from normal. For nearly 10 hours, Mr. Dziekanski stayed in the Arrivals Hall, growing increasingly frustrated and eventually becoming frantic.</p>
<p>Outside, in the public area, his mother spent nearly six hours pacing the corridors and, in broken English, asking airport officials for help in locating her son.</p>
<p>Mr. Kosteckyj said she visited one booth in international arrivals &#8220;at least three to four times and conveyed to them that she was concerned about her son being in the area and she wanted to get a message to him and how could she do that? They wrote her name down and said that they would make inquiries.&#8221;</p>
<p>At about 10 p.m., she was told he wasn&#8217;t there. She made the long drive home, only to find a phone message waiting, saying her son had been found.</p>
<p>&#8220;She called back to immigration when she got in, which would have been around 2 a.m., and spoke to someone there and was advised that her son was somewhere in the area and was fine. And she advised, you know, &#8216;Please take care of him because he can&#8217;t speak English and I&#8217;ll get there as soon as I can.&#8217; And of course he had died, been killed really, some time on or about 1 or 1:30,&#8221; Mr. Kosteckyj said.</p>
<p>At a news conference, Ms. Cisowski said she had dreamed of opening a small business in Kamloops with her son. &#8220;I&#8217;ve lost my only family,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I studied English during the day and at night I saved money to get my son to Canada.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Dziekanski arrived with three bags, two of which were filled with geography books.</p></blockquote>

<p>Arpaio has held the office of Sheriff since 1992, with overwhelming support from Maricopa&#8217;s extreme-right voters, by posing as &#8220;America&#8217;s Toughest Sheriff.&#8221; He furthers this image, not by reducing violent crimes, but by humiliating his inmates in the county jail, most of whom are awaiting trial and therefore are innocent until proven guilty. He feeds them spoiled bologna at a cost of 30 cents a day, parades them in chain gangs in pink underwear (and once forced a chain gang to march through <a href="http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119163" target="new">Downtown Phoenix</a> in the summer heat, wearing nothing but underwear), points webcams at them (including in the women&#8217;s bathroom) to rob them of all privacy, and generally is so brutal that he has come to the attention of <a href="http://www.amnestyusa.org/countries/usa/document.do?id=264F27ED2D5EEA1480256A0F005C0255" target="new">Amnesty International</a>. An Irish judge even <a href="http://www.cnsnews.com/news/viewstory.asp?Page=%5CNation%5Carchive%5C200507%5CNAT20050729c.html" target="new">refused to extradite</a> an alleged pedophile priest to Arizona, citing Arpaio&#8217;s &#8220;chillingly sadistic pleasure in his role as incarcerator.&#8221;</p>
<p>Arpaio&#8217;s department is a festering swamp of cronyism and incompetence. It&#8217;s not uncommon for his testosterone-addled stormtroopers to <a href="http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2004-08-05/news/dog-day-afternoon/full" target="new">destroy homes</a> and terrify whole neighborhoods while attempting to serve a search warrant. And a long list of people has died suspiciously while in custody, forcing the county to pay out $50 million of taxpayers&#8217; money in settlement over the last few years. But Arpaio will never clean up his act; he&#8217;s too busy with <a href="http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/98903" target="new">political intrigue</a> and <a href="http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1999-03-25/news/joe-s-spies/full" target="new">dirty tricks</a> against Democratic politicians and the few local <a href="http://whatiknow.freedomblogging.com/2007/08/16/court-tells-sheriff-arpaio-to-comply-with-law/" target="new">journalists</a> who call him on his out-of-control brutality.</p>
<p>The one thorn in Arpaio&#8217;s side has been the independent <a href="http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/" target="new">Phoenix New Times</a>, which for years has been documenting Arpaio&#8217;s corruption, criminality, incompetence and ever-increasing megalomania. Last night, Arpaio finally snapped and had the owners of the newspaper <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/1019newtimes1019.html" target="new">arrested</a>. He&#8217;s also subpoenaing all logs from the paper&#8217;s web server, wanting to see dates, times, IP addresses, computer types and referring pages for everyone who viewed the website in the last several years. Good grief! Abolishing freedom of the press, shredding the <a href="http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2007-10-18/news/breathtaking-abuse-of-the-constitution/" target="new">Constitution</a>, using the Sheriff&#8217;s office as his private gang of goons and legbreakers, harassing ordinary people for the crime of visiting a website that criticizes him - how much does he think he can get away with?</p>
<p>The time is long overdue to rein in this petty, tinpot tyrant, this self-aggrandizing buffoon who has nothing but contempt for the rule of law. Let him spend a few years in his <a href="http://www.cnn.com/US/9907/27/tough.sheriff/" target="new">tent city</a>, sweltering in the desert in pink underwear and eating rotten bologna. In fact I&#8217;d say that&#8217;s too good for him!</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>The Palm Beach County School Board refused to pull 80 books referencing homosexuality, atheism and abortion from the library shelves of two high schools.</p>
<p>But the mother fighting since September to ban them refuses to give up.</p>
<p>Laura Lopez said she will start a church-to-church petition and reach out to a Christian law center to represent her.</p>
<p>&#8220;To me, it doesn&#8217;t end here. This is just the beginning,&#8221; said the West Palm Beach mom.</p>
<p>Two school committees and Superintendent Art Johnson had already shot down her request. On Wednesday, the board voted unanimously to back Johnson.</p>
<p>It was unclear whether Lopez had any challenges left.</p>
<p>Lopez had 15 minutes to make her case during a school board workshop. She listed a litany of sins that she says are promoted by books she found doing a simple key word search on the library computers at Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Royal Palm Beach High School. She acknowledged she hadn&#8217;t read a single one of the books cover-to-cover.</p>
<p>Among the objectionable books were: Medical Ethics: Moral and Legal Conflicts in Health Care, Coping When a Parent is Gay and The Cider House Rules, a John Irving novel about a rural doctor who runs an orphanage and performs illegal abortions.</p>
<p>She also expanded her objections to include the curriculum taught in schools.</p>
<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re teaching kids the Big Bang. They&#8217;re teaching kids lies,&#8221; she told the board. &#8220;The world was created 6,000 years ago. In my son&#8217;s elementary school book, it says the world was created several million years ago.&#8221;</p>
<p>Board members applauded Lopez&#8217;s advocacy but found no grounds to support her.</p>
<p>Board member Monroe Benaim talked about students who struggle with their sexuality or contemplate suicide and might be afraid to talk to someone but could find some solace in a library book.</p>
<p>&#8220;As a school board member, I&#8217;m a school board member to all children whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, pregnant or not pregnant and no matter what they believe religiously,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>One of Lopez&#8217;s two teenaged sons, Jesse, a sophomore at Royal Palm Beach, came to support his mother. Her oldest son, whom she did not name, does not agree with his mother&#8217;s objections to the library books.</p>
<p>Jesse Lopez said he worries about his fellow classmates who turn to friends for information, who may consult books full of lies. &#8220;If their friends rely on them and if those books are teaching evil, that&#8217;s just corrupt,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Despite the controversial topic, Lopez&#8217;s hearing drew only a few people to the daytime board workshop. She brought a friend and a youth pastor. Two members of the Atheists of Broward County also came, but did not testify.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t like a book, walk to the next aisle and find a different one,&#8221; Ken Loukinen, president of the atheist organization, said after the meeting.</p>

Why don&#8217;t you stop picking apart the Bible and listen to God and have faith in him. God says to trust in him, he is the creator and you are the creation. You are trying to tell God what to do and it does not work that way. Wake up!</p>
<p>I never said that I did not read the eighty books that I did research on. I read something about each and everyone of them and did a lot of research. What I said was I did not read each book cover to cover.</p>
<p>Thank God people like you are not running the country and the other people that have spoke against God, God calls you fools. If you were there would be rapes and murders in the streets and you would think it was fine.</p>
<p>The Bible talks about a lot of things, it talks about Christians being stoned, a lot of things that are sins but what you are lying to people about and yourselves is the Bible says sin and these are sin is wrong.</p>
<p>To the person that said that I said, I guess he kind of thinks I&#8217;m stupid. I never said that and it does not say that in this article. Why are all of you people telling lies. I know why, because you are children of Satan and follow and listen to him.</p>
<p>I am very tired of talking to all of you. I agree with God that you are all fools and foolish people lie against the word of God and twist it. Like I said before, if you want to know truth read the Bible. Pray and ask God for wisdom because from what I have read are lies, stupidity and lack of knowledge.</p>
<p>Last thing, if none of you have read the books that I have and done research look them up on the Internet to find out what they are about. Get knowledge before you open your mouth. The Bible is the knowledge you need for life.</p>

<p>If you think that it is alright for teenagers to read about murder - abortion, 14 year old kids have bisexual and homosexual relations, rape, murder, AIDS, suicide, the list goes on and on. If you think that this is alright for kids to read about then thank God in Heaven that I am not your child. All of this is wrong and has nothing to do with education, only sin and corruption of young people&#8217;s minds. Some day these young people are going to run the country, if you want a corrupt government then thank God it is not up to you to make decisions for our country.</p>
<p>Wake up, give your lives to God and teach the youth good morals. What is wrong with you, I know it&#8217;s called listening and following Satan. Well, if you keep on God says you will be with him when you die also in the lake of fire burning for all eternity.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Southern Baptists are up in arms over a proposed hate crimes bill, officially titled the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (S. 1105), that would establish a new federal offense for so-called “hate crimes” and add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as protected classes, as well as mandate a separate federal criminal prosecution for state offenses for crimes motivated by “the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of any person.”</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not a supporter of &#8220;specific legislation&#8221;.  If someone mugs me, I fail to see where their motivation mitigates their already illegal act.  We have laws in place against violence toward others.  There are appropriate moments in a trial to mention motivation, generally in the penalty phase.  If Joe steals food from a store he&#8217;s guilty of theft and should be adjudicated as guilty.  If he stole the food to feed his family due to his circumstances, then his motivation should be considered in meeting out punishment.  If a person is found to be guilty of murder, why they did it is not material to the murder charge.</p>
<p>So despite my support for equal treatment of gays, straights and all those in between,  I don&#8217;t support creating laws that are too specific and restrictive.  That only adds to the burden of proof for the prosecution.</p>
<p>You might presume then that I agree with the Southern Baptists in their opposition to S. 1105.  I don&#8217;t.  Ironically, it&#8217;s their motivation I disagree with.  I agree with their conclusion, but think their reasoning is faulty.</p>

<p>The U.S. Senate is expected to vote within the next few days on legislation that could ultimately cost Christians their freedom to share their biblical beliefs on homosexuality.</p>
<p>I realize that I asked for your help already this week to help restore the Federal Communications Commission’s authority to clean up indecency on broadcast television, but I believe this bill on “hate crimes” poses such a threat that it also warrants your attention and action.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) filed a hate crimes bill—officially titled the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (S. 1105)—as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill, which is currently being debated by the Senate. The vote could occur anytime&#8230;</p>
<p>In essence, it would codify into federal law that certain lifestyles, in this case homosexuality, deserve greater protection under the law than others. This is a clear violation of the 14th Amendment, which provides equal protection under the law.</p>
<p>Better termed “thought crimes” legislation, it could result in law enforcement officials policing perceived thoughts that motivate violent actions against homosexuals, as well as speech that conveys a negative message about homosexual behavior, even if no violent action follows.</p>
<p>This is not a far-fetched understanding of the potential danger of this legislation. Sweden, for example, used its hate crimes law to imprison Pastor Ake Green for 30 days for preaching in his own church pulpit a grace-filled message on homosexuality taken from the Old and New Testaments. Other instances of policing thoughts and speech have occurred in nations like Australia, Britain, and Canada. Closer to home, police used a Pennsylvania hate crimes law to arrest 11 Christians in 2005 for urging people at a gay pride festival to turn from their behavior.</p>
<p>The truth is all violent crimes are hate crimes and are already prosecuted to the full extent of the law. S. 1105 is unnecessary and unconstitutional. Law enforcement officials should continue to prosecute actions, not thoughts or speech.  &nbsp;<a href="http://erlc.com/article/stop-senate-from-passing-thought-crimes-bill" title="http://erlc.com/article/stop-senate-from-passing-thought-crimes-bill" target="_blank">http://erlc.com/article/stop-senate-from&#8230;</a>)</p></blockquote>
<p>Their fear of this bill is groundless.  It does not propose to limit free speech.  Anti-homosexual rhetoric would only be punishable if it incited violence, and again we already have laws to deal with inciting violence.  Their freedom to harass and annoy homosexuals would still be protected.  They would still be allowed to hate those whom they love to hate.</p>
<p>I further find it revealing that they don&#8217;t protest the protection of religious belief the bill introduces.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Outsiders are not simply malcontents.  They are the people who don&#8217;t always fit into society as smoothly as others.   The are the ignored, the passed-by, the unimportant.  Those are seldom attributes they assign themselves; they&#8217;re assigned by others.<br />
But there are those outsiders who have found the nugget of value within themselves.  Paul Potts is one of those.  He&#8217;s not especially attractive.  He got bullied in school.  He could easily have become bitter, disillusioned and withdrawn.  Instead he uncovered a talent, an absolutely beautiful voice, and despite being a mobile-phone salesman, he gathered up the courage to risk more humiliation by sharing his ability with the world.  And the world is better off for that.</p>
<p>Please allow yourself to enjoy this too short video, and let it encourage you to follow your own dream.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I disliked the phrase, &#8220;America, love it or leave it&#8221; when it made the rounds in the &#8217;60s, and I dislike it now. I don&#8217;t see how any thinking adult can claim to love the freedoms we enjoy while mouthing such un-American sentiments.</p>
<p>I am grateful daily for having been born in America. Considering my personality, there are few other countries I could have been as happy growing up in. When the opportunity arose, I volunteered to defend the country that had granted me such a free and enjoyable life. I love my country, I love its Constitution, and it saddens me to see the powerful, especially those who are employed to represent its citizens, use this country&#8217;s freedoms to cause it harm.</p>
<p>Not just due to Bush, not just at the hands of the Senate; this country is straying from what makes it a great country.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve said before that I can envision a move in the near future to push the U.S. further toward a theocracy. I hope I&#8217;m wrong. And I don&#8217;t put the responsibility for this on those Christians actually trying to live up to the tenets of their belief: love, joy and peace. Those in power use their Christian veneer as another mask to wear to appease another influential group of citizens. Why do politicians spend so much time with religious and high society types? Because those people can deliver votes, and votes win elections.Then the politicians gain even more power, as do the wealthy who support them. These people represent a perversion of both the faith they claim and the position of trust they hold. Those who have goals in mind that directly contradict the spirit and the law of this country, they are traitors, no better than Jonathan Pollard.</p>
<p>I enjoy the freedom to, and feel an obligation to, speak out against those I perceive as hostile to the roots of our republic. If I wanted to live anywhere else, I&#8217;d have left years ago and wouldn&#8217;t give a damn what happened here, except as it effected me there.</p>
<p>So yeah, I do get pissed when someone suggests that I should just <i>fall into step</i>. I get even more irritated when someone implies that by pointing out the flaws in the government I&#8217;m failing to support the troops. The stupidity of that comment is on a par with &#8220;<i>every time you masturbate a kitten dies</i>,&#8221; but a thousand times more insulting and inaccurate.</p>
<p>It was <i>people </i>who exposed Nixon and Clinton, people who refused to respect the office of president if that required turning a blind eye to the activities of the president. The desire to keep our country honest crosses all political lines.</p>
<p>But too many people are starting to believe that unquestioning loyalty is the only patriotic position that&#8217;s acceptable. Anything less than blind obedience is called &#8220;hatred.&#8221; Administrations sometimes fear those who want to expose their corruption. They have the tools, money and popularity, to influence public opinion far better than any of us could hope to. Our only weapon is the Constitution. Once they can create an atmosphere in the U.S. in which well-meaning citizens will allow their freedoms to slowly be curtailed, there may be no stopping them. Bush is like an experiment being conducted by the real power behind the throne. They want to see just how little effort they have to expend to alter public opinion. It seems to not require much.</p>
<p>I really want to get angry at those who utter &#8220;Love it or Leave it,&#8221; but I feel pity instead. They really want to love their country, and they certainly don&#8217;t hate it, but the object of their passion is a chimera. They have bought the story, accepted without questioning the official explanation. It&#8217;s sad.</p>
