Would-Be Book Banner Fails to Prevail

Once again the fundamentalist response to 21st century thinking is to ban any book which challenges their 2000 year old mythology. Laura Green of the Palm Beach Post writes:
The Palm Beach County School Board refused to pull 80 books referencing homosexuality, atheism and abortion from the library shelves of two high schools.
But the mother fighting since September to ban them refuses to give up.
Laura Lopez said she will start a church-to-church petition and reach out to a Christian law center to represent her.
“To me, it doesn’t end here. This is just the beginning,” said the West Palm Beach mom.
Two school committees and Superintendent Art Johnson had already shot down her request. On Wednesday, the board voted unanimously to back Johnson.
It was unclear whether Lopez had any challenges left.
Lopez had 15 minutes to make her case during a school board workshop. She listed a litany of sins that she says are promoted by books she found doing a simple key word search on the library computers at Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Royal Palm Beach High School. She acknowledged she hadn’t read a single one of the books cover-to-cover.
Among the objectionable books were: Medical Ethics: Moral and Legal Conflicts in Health Care, Coping When a Parent is Gay and The Cider House Rules, a John Irving novel about a rural doctor who runs an orphanage and performs illegal abortions.
She also expanded her objections to include the curriculum taught in schools.
“They’re teaching kids the Big Bang. They’re teaching kids lies,” she told the board. “The world was created 6,000 years ago. In my son’s elementary school book, it says the world was created several million years ago.”
Board members applauded Lopez’s advocacy but found no grounds to support her.
Board member Monroe Benaim talked about students who struggle with their sexuality or contemplate suicide and might be afraid to talk to someone but could find some solace in a library book.
“As a school board member, I’m a school board member to all children whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, pregnant or not pregnant and no matter what they believe religiously,” he said.
One of Lopez’s two teenaged sons, Jesse, a sophomore at Royal Palm Beach, came to support his mother. Her oldest son, whom she did not name, does not agree with his mother’s objections to the library books.
Jesse Lopez said he worries about his fellow classmates who turn to friends for information, who may consult books full of lies. “If their friends rely on them and if those books are teaching evil, that’s just corrupt,” he said.
Despite the controversial topic, Lopez’s hearing drew only a few people to the daytime board workshop. She brought a friend and a youth pastor. Two members of the Atheists of Broward County also came, but did not testify.
“If you don’t like a book, walk to the next aisle and find a different one,” Ken Loukinen, president of the atheist organization, said after the meeting.
Her comments after the article reveal a mindset that obviously believes freedom of thought is a dangerous concept:
Jul 14, 2007 1:50 PM
To the atheist from Broward County:You are a lier and you stand with the father of lies Satan. Funny, I thought the same thing about you. You take the Bible and twist it’s words around just like Satan does and has for years. Satan is very pleased with you and thinks also that people like you are increadibly stupid for believing him because you are going to believe Satan all the way to Hell.
The Bible says only the fool in his heart says there is no God. You are a fool, God says. I do know the word of God and so did my friend that was with me, way more then you do. He even completely knocked down when you said that the Apostle Paul did not see God. He said to you I am closing my eyes does this mean that I am not talking to you, that you are not in front of me. The Apostle Paul did see Jesus Christ like we both said. We talked some with you about the word of God but you were just picking it apart as you will probably keep doing until you die and go to Hell with Satan in the lake of fire.
What I said was that my son has a friend that his mom is in a lesbian relationship living with a woman and I said I love her as Jesus does. God never says in his word that he does not like people, it says in the Bible to love people but hate the sins that they do and lead them to the truth. Why don’t you stop picking apart the Bible and listen to God and have faith in him. God says to trust in him, he is the creator and you are the creation. You are trying to tell God what to do and it does not work that way. Wake up!
I never said that I did not read the eighty books that I did research on. I read something about each and everyone of them and did a lot of research. What I said was I did not read each book cover to cover.
Thank God people like you are not running the country and the other people that have spoke against God, God calls you fools. If you were there would be rapes and murders in the streets and you would think it was fine.
The Bible talks about a lot of things, it talks about Christians being stoned, a lot of things that are sins but what you are lying to people about and yourselves is the Bible says sin and these are sin is wrong.
To the person that said that I said, I guess he kind of thinks I’m stupid. I never said that and it does not say that in this article. Why are all of you people telling lies. I know why, because you are children of Satan and follow and listen to him.
I am very tired of talking to all of you. I agree with God that you are all fools and foolish people lie against the word of God and twist it. Like I said before, if you want to know truth read the Bible. Pray and ask God for wisdom because from what I have read are lies, stupidity and lack of knowledge.
Last thing, if none of you have read the books that I have and done research look them up on the Internet to find out what they are about. Get knowledge before you open your mouth. The Bible is the knowledge you need for life.

You people are obviously God haters and hate the word of God or you would not be writing all of this garbage.God says woah to those to teach his little one’s the wrong things, better for them to put a mill stone around their necks and be cast into the depths of the sea then to leads anyone the wrong way, with a bunch of lies and away from God.
I feel sorry for you people because you are all in darkness and are allowing Satan to influence your decision, which are the wrong one’s. Satan is smart and he is deceiving you and you are letting him. Wake up to the truth which is the word of God. I know people that have seen Jesus Christ face to face and I have been healed by God and the word of God says that he talks to those that give their lives to him. Like I said before, the Bible says that his word is foolish to those that don’t believe. They don’t understand the things of God and they turn away from him. I will pray for all of you because you are on your way to Hell. I and those that truly love God do not have to be afraid of death or anything else because we know one day we will be with God in Heaven. Whether you believe it or not it is true. Just because you say that it is not true does not make God go away. Look up in the sky, look around you, even Scientist have said that there is a God. It is called faith! Wake up America before it is too late.
I have a sound mind that God has given me. God used Moses, God used Martin Luther King, God used David, and now he has placed this on my heart for the youth of today. What have any of you ever done to stand up for what is right. There is either right or wrong, there are no gray areas. If you are against me, it’s not me that you are against. You are against God and his word because I am doing what the word of God says.
Like I said before, none of you have read any of the books that I have and done all the weeks of research that I have so you have no idea what is in them and don’t know what you are talking about.
If you think that it is alright for teenagers to read about murder - abortion, 14 year old kids have bisexual and homosexual relations, rape, murder, AIDS, suicide, the list goes on and on. If you think that this is alright for kids to read about then thank God in Heaven that I am not your child. All of this is wrong and has nothing to do with education, only sin and corruption of young people’s minds. Some day these young people are going to run the country, if you want a corrupt government then thank God it is not up to you to make decisions for our country.
Wake up, give your lives to God and teach the youth good morals. What is wrong with you, I know it’s called listening and following Satan. Well, if you keep on God says you will be with him when you die also in the lake of fire burning for all eternity.
I don’t have anymore time to waist on talking to all of you so I will end with this. I will pray for you that God opens your eyes because you are followers of Satan and Jesus Christ says get behind me Satan.
Like I said before, the Bible says the gates of Hell are wide open and the road that leads to God is narrow. If you don’t give your lives to God then you are on your way to Hell where you will be tortured for all eternity.

As a Chrisitian I try to be tolerant of many [all, actually] people. However, when they make arguments without structured reasoning or rudimentary spelling I tend to ignore them.
Those who use the 6,000 years as taught by the Jewish religion need to be reminded that in the Bible it is stated that the marking of time for God is not the same as for man. [Day as a thousand years, thousand years as a day]
People tend to lock in to one verse to the exclusion of the rest of the Bible. It is this same type that can condemn abortion under ANY circumstance, yet vote for, and take pleasure in the death of a criminal in the gas chamber or electric chair.
I find both of these ways of thinking wrong, and wonder how rational minds can support such irrational thought. They fail to remember, God gave us the ability to think, and just because the Bible does not say that STUPIDITY is an abomination to God does not mean it isn’t.

“God says woah”
Since when did God become Keanu Reeves? ;)
That woman has some serious mental problems. Hardly any of her sentences were coherent and her A leads to Q logic would make no sense to anyone with even the smallest cognitive abilities.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of lunatics like her running around. It’s funny how they fear education and information and are highly judgmental. They plug their ears, point fingers, call people names, and then expect others to follow in their footsteps.
Why would anyone want to be an angry, uneducated, hateful buffoon? It’s people like this woman that are turning people away from religion. That’s just my opinion though.

This person is why Dawkins has decided that all religion is bad for humanity. She and her unfortunate child are also why I’m finding myself tending to agree with that standpoint more and more often.
Attention moderate and otherwise level-headed theists: People like this woman are going to push and push until we’re back in the Dark Ages or until all religion is outlawed, whichever comes first. If you don’t want either of those things to happen you need to start speaking out about it, start reigning in the nuttier ones like her before they cause so much trouble that it hurts YOU too. Don’t kid yourselves, they hold you in just as low regard as they do athiests, even if they’re baring their teeth in a smile today come tomorrow they may be baring them to go for your throats. They’re a dangerous sect among you! Do something!

Being a Christian, I cannot believe the folderol that my “brethren” believe. They listen to their ministers, pastors, and priests but never dig in to the book that gives them their direction in direct violation of what that book teaches. We are given free will and a brain. Use them.
The earth is 6000 years old or so – now tell me where in the bible it says this. It takes a lot of junk “science” and voodoo math to come up with that one.
I fully understand a parent wanting to influence what their child reads and learn within the framework of their beliefs – and they have the right to do so. But read the books first silly! And maybe, just maybe they should let the child read them but then sit down and explain their beliefs on the subject of the book. How is a child to be ready for the “world” if they are so sheltered from the “bad stuff” out there that they fall flat on their face when first confronted with it?
As to the hell letter, hmm, it is written in the bible that speaking the “truth” to non-believers will sound like crazy talk (to paraphrase). So, speaking to a non-believer in such a matter is against the Christian faith. They can’t even follow their own holy book. How silly they are!
In a free society, each person has the right to live their life and believe in what they wish to believe as long as it does not affect another person’s pursuit of happiness nor their well being nor harm their financial status (yes I am a libertarian (both upper and lower case L)).
Christians out their, if you want to convert someone, you must discuss your faith and belief with that person on a friendly and personable level. You must respect their right to say no and to them leave them alone if they reject the conversation. Flaming someone will never achieve anything and only makes you look stupid.
To all the people reading this from other faiths and of no belief in any god, I apologize. All religions and groups have their insane, stupid, and silly people. To quote a well known phrase: “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”

When she enrolled her boys in a state-run school, she forfeited her rights and responsibilities to regulate and administer their education. Parents can’t delegate to the government their responsibility to educate their children, and then turn around and wonder why the government educates those children as it sees fit.
This woman’s problem isn’t with wanting those books pulled from her sons’ school library; it’s in thinking she has any say in the matter once her sons’ school is run by someone other than her.

If this lady is so terrified of her kids coming in contact with science or ideas, she could home school them. She doesn’t because the agenda here is to legislate her beliefs.
Believe what you want, but freedom of religion is also freedom FROM religion.
With a mind like that, it won’t be long til we see her in public office.

Outsider, this one lost me at the “their 2000 year old mythology” line. With the style and method that you use to make yet another of your angry points, you are doing more to make everyday conversation and dialog about anything more difficult. You are pushing people away. There can only be one way–Outsider’s way–Individuals who disagree with you are bad. People who agree with you are good. Skip all that nonsense about conviction, faith, life experience, testimony and tradition, let alone the millions of individuals that have lived and died without your sage help.
Outsider, the depth to which you “feel” the strength of your conviction about this pet subject of yours does not mean you are right. It is just your strongly-held position. It can be subject to everyone of the same lousy “arguments” that you make about strongly-held positions that others hold with which you happen to disagree.
If this is the best you can do, those to whom you are responsible to for creating these posts are being short-changed, and it would be wise for your supervisors to reevaluate their contract with you.

I’m kind of suprised that there are no comments here from certain Lockergnome readers threatening to cancel their subscriptions to Lockergnome because they think this article is somehow negative about Christians.
I think it is great that Chris has made Lockergnome into a forum where all kinds of topics can be openly discussed. This kind of information needs to be presented to the world, but it seems so much of the “mainstream media” has become so consumed by a fear of offending anyone, that things like this never see the light of day. People like the woman this story is about (Laura Lopez) represent a terrible threat to our freedom and our future. The world needs to be made aware that this threat still exists and is still as widespread as ever. Thank God the Palm Beach County School Board didn’t let this crazy woman con them into doing something stupid.

Guess she was around 6000 years ago and incontrivably knows that is when god created the world…
Shocking they even granted her 15 minutes to speak. I would have simply told her to go find a talk show to babble to.

Of the many freedoms we Americans enjoy, the most significant may well be our freedom of information and it’s a one-way street; there’s no going back once you’ve turned onto it. Throughout human history oppressive governments have sought to control people by controlling their sources of information and, thus far, it’s never been an effective technique. It’s efficacy is inversely proportional to people’s ability to disseminate information. Controlling information was the root premise in George Orwell’s novel, 1984, but George couldn’t have anticipated the difficulty of controlling information in an age of instantaneous communication. Big Brother couldn’t have survived television, let alone the internet. Those who seek to restrict information to predefined channels of their own choosing would be well advised to remember a little adage the web has popularized. “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging”
There are people on earth who’s religious views, sexual preferences, political opinions, cultural behaviors and skin pigmentation differ from my own. If I exclude them from my awareness, I’m closing my eyes to knowledge. I’m prepared to fight, to the death if need be, anyone who attempts to impose such restrictions on my awareness. How great a fool would I be to impose such restrictions on myself? Or worse, my children?
Fecal matter is fecal matter, whether or not one wishes to quibble over whether it’s origin was bovine, avian or hominid.
Nuff said.

In reply to Steve Higgins:
“With the style and method that you use to make yet another of your angry points, you are doing more to make everyday conversation and dialog about anything more difficult.”
It would appear that isn’t the case, judging by some of the very well-written replies others have posted. On many issues moderation is the best course. Being extreme or fanatical isn’t realistic or appropriate. Yet there are other issues, and I consider this to be one, where being a moderate is ineffective and enabling. It’s the moderate’s toleration of religious thought that enables terrorists to kill in the name of their gods. It’s the failure of those who perceive the dangers in religion to speak out against it that has permitted religion to be misused as it has. I would characterize myself as outspoken and strongly opinionated, not fanatical or extreme. I’m not angry, I’m disappointed that in this day and age we still cling to superstitions and myths to make us think we’re special, chosen, separate from other people.
“You are pushing people away. There can only be one way–Outsider’s way–Individuals who disagree with you are bad. People who agree with you are good.”
I’m not sure where you read that, but I’ve never thought that way or posted such nonsense. I value highly the right people have to think for themselves. Why else would I be opposed to religious thinking that discourages questioning and skepticism and answers all the really hard questions with, “god’s ways are not our ways”? I appreciate any opinion in agreement or disagreement with my own, as long as it’s the result of critical thinking and not simply the reiteration of pre-packaged, mindless rhetoric memorized by those too indoctrinated to think their own thoughts and have their own opinions.
“Skip all that nonsense about conviction, faith, life experience, testimony and tradition, let alone the millions of individuals that have lived and died without your sage help.”
Witches have been burned at the stake without recanting their beliefs in magic. Should we then respect the validity of magic? Just because people have sincerely and deeply believed something says nothing about the validity or credibility of that belief.
“Outsider, the depth to which you “feel” the strength of your conviction about this pet subject of yours does not mean you are right. It is just your strongly-held position. It can be subject to everyone of the same lousy “arguments” that you make about strongly-held positions that others hold with which you happen to disagree.”
I agree absolutely. What have I ever said to make anyone think otherwise?
“If this is the best you can do, those to whom you are responsible to for creating these posts are being short-changed, and it would be wise for your supervisors to reevaluate their contract with you.”
Is that the best you can do? We blog in hopes someone will read our words, that our words and thoughts will make them think as well. You read this article, didn’t you? It made you think, didn’t it? Then what my “supervisor’s” expectations are for this blog have been successfully met.
