iPhone Rokr and iPod Nano Announced

The iPod Nano and iPhone were unveiled this week by Apple. The iPhone came as no big surprise, but the iPod Nano took everyone off guard.

The Apple iPhone (nee the Cingular Motorola ROKR (rocker, get it?) phone) was uncovered months ago, and confirmed as a near certainty last week. In fact on these very pages we confirmed the Motorola ROKR phone as the new Apple rocker phone. Perhaps the one unknown now known (and to me a disappointment) is that the phone has only Shuffle-like capabilities - you get only random play of your tunes.

Canada: No Pirate Tax on iPods, MP3 Players (They’re Players, Not ‘Enablers’…Hello!)

In a decision in which the Canadian Private Copying Collective (somewhat analagous to the U.S.’ RIAA, except that the CPCC actually represents the interests of the artists) says that it is “disappointed”, the Canadian high court has this week let stand a ruling that the CPCC could no longer levy what some have been calling “pirate tax” on iPods, iPod shuffles, and other MP3 players.

What’s in a Name: The Blogcast Formerly Known as Podcast

According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, the term “podcast” is a bit taboo around the offices, and with the employees, of a certain Redmond, Washington software giant. Hence they have taken to using the term “blogcast”, a term which the PI admits is somewhat awkward.

The Time I Spend with My Daughter Removing Spyware is Very Precious

“Sure, I could get a Mac, but the time I spend with my daughter removing spyware is very precious.” A great line, already being attributed to Intel CEO Paul Otellini, but actually penned by Good Morning Silicon Valley’s John Paczkowski on the GMSV blog.

Use your Mac to Have a Print-Out of Your Current Calendar Waiting for You Every Morning!

If you’re anything like me, you and your family could really benefit from having completely current copies of your calendar readily available in the most obvious spots - on the refrigerator, in a schoolbag or briefcase, on your desk, or, as with my family, on the back of the front door so that it’s the last thing you check on your way out the door.

Use Down Time While Out and About to Catch Up and Send Email with Your Powerbook or iBook

How often during your average week do you find yourself cooling your heels while you are out and away from your office or home? A half-hour wait at the doctor’s or dentist’s office, fifteen minutes while waiting for others to arrive to a meeting, twenty minutes on the train or bus? It all adds up, and many people find that it adds up to several hours during the work week.

New Mac Site Wants You! MacYourLife.com

Aunty is involved with a brand new website called “Mac Your Life”.

It’s still a baby, fledgingly site, but the premise is that MacYourLife.com is not your usual Mac website. In fact, Mac Your Life turns your typical Mac website on its head - this is not a site about what you can do with your Mac. It’s about what your Mac can do for you.

It’s about organizing your life, using your Mac

That’s where you come in. Got any favourite tips or articles on how you’ve used your Mac to get yourself more organized or efficient at home, work, or in life generally?

If so, please send them along! (There is a submission link at the bottom of every page.) Any articles chosen for publication will of course carry full attribution, with a link back to the author’s website.

Mac Your Life contestt: A free Slam a Spammer t-shirt to the first person who can provide a workable script or application which will print out your iCal calendar automatically, on a daily basis, so that a printed version of your calendar is waiting for you every morning.

See you there! That’s MacYourLife.com

At Long Last: Sync Your Sidekick With Your Mac With Markspace’s New Missing Sync For Hiptop

Many of Aunty’s gentle readers know that Aunty adores her T-Mobile Sidekick (also known, hardware-wise, as the Danger Hiptop). Despite the Sidekick being in the news lately primarily due to Paris Hilton’s Sidekick being hacked, it is a wonderful little device, providing always-on email, AOL Instant Messenger, Web browsing, and lots of other goodies, wherever you are. It would be unfair to call it the poor-person’s Blackberry, because in many ways it’s much better than the Blackberry, but it is in fact half the price. (Actually right now Amazon is paying people to take them, but more about that in a minute.)

Homemade iPod Mini “Tiny Machine” Ad Takes Internet by Storm

iPod Mini fans do lots of interesting things with their tiny machines, but George Masters has taken it to a new art, literally. Masters has created the ultimate advertisement for his tiny machine, basing his homemade iPod Mini commercial on, appropriately enough, a song by ’80s pop group the “Darling Buds” called “Tiny Machine.”

Masters’ iPod Mini ad features ’70s-style Peter Max-ish graphics, flying hearts, thumping music, and even a graphic representation of an iPod Mini being slid open. It’s a really well done piece, and while Masters created it for fun, it’s caught the eyes of many in the professional marketing community.
