Running Dual Monitors with an iMac

On a PC, I feel that running dual monitors is a logical step to better productivity. I mean, why not? This way you have twice as much screen space to work with while also being able to view one piece of software running, while reading the manual on how to use it on the other monitor. The same goes for writing, coding and Web design. In all instances, dual monitors rock. Unfortunately, the only tower option for Mac users is the Mac Pro tower. This of course, means that you would have to spend a whole lot more than you would with say, an iMac. But did you know that you can actually use an iMac with a second monitor? Best of all, it’s not really that difficult!

Running Dual Monitors With An iMac

Connecting your second monitor

For those of you with a newer iMac, your video out port is going to be a mini display port with the ability to provide you with DVI/VGA connectivity if desired. You will need an adapter to connect the second monitor. Once everything is connected, turn the iMac and second monitor on and then make the needed resolution adjustments from the display settings. Understand, however, that this will look best if you can find a monitor that best matches the screen size and resolution of the iMac to which you’re connecting.

Another consideration is making sure your existing graphics hardware will work with dual monitors. This is something most advanced PC users are aware of, but Mac users might find themselves in unfamiliar territory. If you have a newer Mac, find out what kind of card you are running and do some research to make sure it plays well with two displays. I hate to see anyone damage anything because they thought that a second port is enough to warrant a second monitor. So it pays to be safe vs. being sorry.

For my money, I think that an iMac can really benefit from the second display. And with the extra screen space, I think you’ll find that doing pretty much everything becomes a whole lot simpler in the long run.

I don’t really see how adding photos in the sidebar is making Twitter more like Facebook. It’s hardly a huge change, simply convenient.
