How To Make An iPhone App?

How does one go about making an iPhone app? Clearly there is the desire and skill in knowing how to code an iOS application. This is fairly obvious, as this is really needed for creating any piece of software. But are there specific steps that one needs to consider? Like, not merely duplicating more of what is already out there? I think so and as most developers will likely tell you, no amount of blood, sweat and tears will matter if no one is willing to use the app.

Figuring out what people want

The most obvious way to figure this out is to take some time and really scout out what is currently missing within the market place. Believe it or not, there are plenty of ideas out there that have not truly been tapped into. And while everyone out there is chasing after the iPad, with the next “Flipboard” killer idea, the fact of the matter is that one doesn’t have to develop something quite that complicated to compete.

Solve a problem, make someone happy. Seriously, it’s really a matter of finding that sweet spot in entertaining (games), offering something for productivity (utilities/office) or keeping people up to date (news, etc). Hit one of those areas in a way that is really filling in a need, you will have a winner. Trust the success of others who have taken a chance and won.

Hiring a developer vs going it alone

If you’re already an app developer, then this last part is fairly obvious. After all, you have the basic know how. But it might still be a good idea to have an experienced iOS developer handy due to the fact that dealing with Apple can be, well, interesting as you are trying to get something approved by them. To say that they don’t always make this easy on the first try, would be a bit of an understatement. But once it is and you can get it in front of enough people, let the fun begin as users discover your latest creation.  My advice, get help, study what works and what doesn’t and stay clear of those cookie cutter solutions out there.

The rest, really depends on your skills, concept and what the market looks like for  the idea you’re trying to move forward with.
