Fiery iPods Are No Problem For The Flame Retardant

There should be an image here!Love your iPod Touch? How much love for it would you have should it decide to explode in your pocket? Okay, at the very least — how about a nasty burn? These are some of the questions being asked after reading this report from a Seattle based TV station.

Despite talking about the iPods overheating here amongst other sites on the Web, Apple will of course continue to write this off as coincidence. As the article goes deeper, it looks like Apple is in fact, in the wrong and doing absolutely nothing to remedy the problem.

It should be noted however, that the article is not really disclosing who made which batteries or if this problem goes beyond just the iPod Touch. Despite this, the buck stops at Apple. And thus far, NOTHING appears to be in the works to reassure folks that this sort of thing is going to be weeded out in the future.

I’m reading and responding to this on my iPod.I’ve never heard of this problAAAAArgh!!!

I seriously doubt that Apple is doing nothing to fix the problem. They typically try to play it cool to the public and make it seem like a small problem while in the background, in an undisclosed bunker, they have hundreds of engineers working on it.

For gods sake! This exactly the sort of scare mongering I’ve been fighting over on the Geeks! boards to prevent.

There have been 15 reported cases of iPods overheating, and in some of those cases (not all) it resulted in burns on the individuals. Apple have sold over 173,000,000 iPods world-wide. 15 out of 173,000,000 is nothing to start worrying about, you’re probably more likely to be hit by a car than have your iPod burn you. If the number was more like 50 or 100 then there’d be reason to worry, but 15, come on.

Yes, it’s bad that these individuals have been injured, and if this is a result of a manufacturing defect (no matter how rare) Apple are liable to compensate the individuals. But I’ll re-iterate, we know NOTHING of what these individuals were doing with the devices or anything about how they were treated. WIthout that knowledge all we can say is that this is a very very very rare occurrence, and it’s not worth getting worried about.

my ipod touch (2nd gen) never even gets toasty warm. and that’s after lots of continuous use so no problems there.
my MBP on the other hand? ouch!!!
