AIM Taking Aim At The iPhone In A Big Way

There should be an image here!Wow, when was the last time we thought of AIM as anything other than an eyesore? Apparently for iPhone users, AIM just became a whole lot more interesting! Maybe it is just the association with the iPhone, but based on what I am reading here it seems there is a whole lot more to it than that.

The new iPhone push technology is everything. And when it comes to instant messaging, it is really helps the end user becoming a little more excited about the software when the app can run in the back ground. That’s right, no more having to have the application “open” just to view incoming messages!

What you get is the option of either using the free ad supported version or the paid ad-free version. In either case, I see AT&T going nuts over this as AIM users will likely be avoiding SMS like it was fire if my guess is right. And this means lost revenue for AT&T and big savings for the end users.

But it’s not like Blackberry users stopped using txt messaging just because they have BBM AND AIM - there’s still the point that you get charged for receiving an IM, and even if you respond via AIM (+1thennumber) you still pay per txt with non iPhone/bb customers. This is in no way a breakthrough, especially since the iPhone already had iChat.
