Steve Is Officially Back!

There should be an image here! It’s official, Steve Jobs is back at work. And for the sake of his family, Steve’s own sense of a daily routine, etc., this is great news. But I think it also raises another important question: is Apple putting itself in harm’s way by remaining so attached to Steve Jobs and his health?

Please realize, I have nothing against the man whatsoever. We can only dream of obtaining the level of success he has seen in his life. But this being said, should Steve not be working like mad not to begin the power shift now before something else comes up? Let me put this another way.

Remember when Bill Gates left (more or less) Microsoft? Remember how smooth and slow that transition was as it took place? Because of this, I believe that the company has no longer found itself attached to who is running it and is showing more focus on what it is producing. For better or worse, mind you.

I see the same thing with Apple. The company has some winning products — the iPhone being its king. Would it not begin to make sense to build out some new mystique surrounding some kind of secret Apple Council rather than around one man? While some would say that Steve leaving would not hurt Apple all that much, I would disagree. Yes, the great ideas would likely continue. But would the stock prices feel the same? After all, perception in the financial world is where the truth is.

Like you I wish Steve Jobs the best and hope he has a long and healthy life from this point on. What has bothered me most about this situation is the fact that Apple has been less than forthcoming about his health this entire time. They built the brand on Steve’s “cool”, and when his health went they were less than truthful about it to the public, and more importantly to their stockholders. Any company built on the reputation and well being of one man as Apple has been up until now is obligated to keep people informed when that changes. Steve Jobs gave up any right to personal privacy in this arena a long time ago with his decisions on how to structure Apple, it’s product design and management. I guess that there’s nothing to be done, but I won’t be buying another product from them. Too bad, because I like my Macbook but it’s getting long in the tooth.

I think Apple success is that it was only one man running Apple and not a whole load of people. other people say this aswell.

hmm… interesting point.
