Apple As A Software Company

There should be an image here!Wait, I thought that Apple had branded itself as a hardware company? You know, a hardware company that happened to also deal in software? It seems that this fact is changing right before our very eyes. These days, Apple is fast becoming an App Store in both a literal and virtual sense.

With a reduction in the cost of its OS for its hardware, developing an incredible means for users to find, try, and purchase software for their mobile devices, it looks like there is just no stopping Apple any time soon.

What I am trying to get my mind around is whether or not we will see an App Store coming to the Mac? Yes, I have been seeing a lot of talk about it, speculation, what have you. But I have yet to see any real evidence of it yet.

I’m in two minds about having an App Store for Mac. I think it would be great having one place full of just Mac software being able to compare things easily, see the ratings and what not but on the other hand I think developers will get away with charging more for their apps as once it’s in App Store it sorta like a “We’re approved by Apple” so you’ll pay more kinda thing. Not making much sense I know but I’m tired so leave me alone :P

I would have to disagree. Apple isn’t a software company, it is definitely a hardware company. As you pointed out Snow Leopard will be a cheap ($29) upgrade for all Leopard users. If you look at a real software company (Microsoft) there is no way they can compete with that price. Apple generates most of its revenues through its hardware - not its software (or others software).

Also, as for an App Store for the Mac - it seems like it would be a good idea on paper, but, not in reality. Why would a desktop developer want to sell his program for $25 and only receive a portion of it? Whereas, the same developer could sell it on his site and make the full $25. If you’re looking at the exposure question, well, I would assume the Mac App Store would be double (if not more) the size of the iPhone App Store and we all know how hard it is to catch a break in that App Store.

I dont think that will be an issue. the devs are pricing fairly in the iphone app store, as opposed to price points in the Blackberry store the iphone store is very reasonable…

i dont see much of a difference between price points in the iphone store and a MAC app store, as far as fairness…

This is indeed very much the path Apple are following, which is a real shame. I hope we don’t see Macs being restricted to an App Store in the way the iPhone and Apple TV is.
I got an iPhone yesterday, so the App Store and the locked-down environment of the phone are new experiences for me. In many ways, it’s a great device and I know I’m going to find it very useful, but in others, it’s a complete pain in the arse. For example, why no support for bluetooth keyboards? That would make it so much more useful!
