iPhone 3G Vs The Pre

By now it seems like nearly everyday the news is rolling out the latest comparisons between the Pre and the iPhone 3G. And for the most part, it is the expected functionality of the Pre called into question. But there is one area where I think users need be clear on.
The Pre will have more horsepower than the iPhone 3G classic. Yes, it’s true. So despite the Pre likely lacking in the sheer number of available apps for download upon release (duh, it’s brand new), it does look like it wins in the hardware department when considering the data in this article.
Yet after reading into it a bit further, it turns out that the iPhone 3G S looks to provide hardware that will be comparable to what the Pre will offer its users. Encouraging to say the least, as both phones will be of the same generation of hardware. But based on my own feelings, hardware may not be enough. The Pre will need to step up with a great feeling UI and apps to match to win this battle with the iPhone 3G S.

You’re right Chris, the Pre is going to need to do a hell of a lot of work to catch up to the iPhone, obviously. Palm doesn’t have two years of trust from the cell phone world under its belt like Apple does. Sure it had the Treo and a few other smartphones on the market but none of those were nearly as accessible and well-advertised as the Pre is/will be.
The iPhone has the clear advantage here because of the credibility factor. People were familiar with Apple’s devices before, whether it was an iPod or an iMac. That made the jump to the iPhone a trusted one. For the average consumer, however, jumping over to Palm isn’t going to be as easy as it was for them to jump to Apple.
In the long run I can’t see the Pre becoming a juggernaut that contends with the iPhone. Sure they have similar insides and specs but Apple has a two years of trusted mobile users, one hell of a developer community and a ton of touch-gamers, something that can’t be done on the Pre.
I’m eager to see what kind of apps people develop for the Palm Pre but I can’t see their app store becoming a sufficient game-changer for their phone.

I think the iPhone 3GS will be great. I’ll probably upgrade from the 3G but the Palm Pre is tempting only because here in NYC, Sprint runs circles around AT&T. They are almost pathetiic; no wait, they are pathetic.

I have had both the first gen iphone and the iphone 3g. I now have the palm pre and have had it for about a week now. That being said, I really do think the Pre has a revolutionary os. It makes multitasking a breeze and their really isn’t a learning curve to it. It is VERY similar to the iphone with the exeption of multitasking and synergy. It is a little lacking in features right now, but it is also a 1.0 device. I think if we give it time it will be right up there with the iphone. I will say that in my area, Sprint is leaps and bounds ahead of ATT as far as network coverage, speed and call quality.

Well, I must say that both of these phones have pros and Cons. The iPhone is a beautiful device with a growing app store that is always releasing new things but the iPhone does not have a outside keyboard making it somewhat difficult to type. The Pre has a beautiful interface with a vibrant screen and a full outside QWERTY keyboard but has few apps.
Thanks Chris

I Have The Old Centro, Debating Getting The Pre, I Wish That IT Was Compatible With Android. Can’t Wait Till Phones Are Advanced Enough Where The Users Can Decide Which OS To Run On Our Phones, Should Not Be So Difficult, I Will Say In Japan, Those Things Are Possible, Why Do We Restrict Innovation So Much Here!? Is It Money?? Much Love To PALM For Staying In The Game, And To Apple Keep Up The Good Work!
