So Many Apps – Not So Much Revenue
Only $20 to 45 Million made from the app store so far? Really, is that all? While this might sound like a tremendous amount of money to some, the fact of the matter is that most of us actually believed that these numbers would have been much higher.
Regardless of these numbers not being as high as we might like, I still feel like the app store has done well considering it being limited to AT&T customers only. Besides, as the above linked article points out. The app store, like iTunes, is a tool to drive the demand for the iPhone which increases the hardware demand.
And as I have said so many times in the the past, Apple remains a hardware company. Software, is but a means to an end for them. So the fact that Apple has not been able to break past $45 Million yet with the app store is really of not consequence.

It may not seem much, but the ‘$1 business model’ has proven to work. I do agree that it is really just a means to generate more hardware sales, but the App Store is still a brilliant creation in its own right.

One point that seems missing is that it’s only in the US where AT&T have a monopoly. Here in AUS we ha e a choice. Also there are several folk here who use an iPod touch and don’t need a carrier to get to the app store. Personally I think the app store is a revolution! I love it.
