40,000 App Strong - Beat That Nokia

As difficult as this is for me to believe, it seems that as of right now, since its inception, the iPhone app store has seen roughly 40,000 in its midst at one time or another. Seriously, 40,000! Just getting my mind around that number is something else.
But this perhaps raises another question. Can other companies, getting ready to launch their own app stores really compete with this? Out of all of the those alternative app stores available on other mobile platforms, will any of them even begin to approach touching these kinds of numbers?
While Nokia is said to be launching their own app store with some impressive numbers, I find myself quite skeptical that anyone out there is going to meet with the level of success the iPhone has seen with sheer volume. It just seems too unlikely to me.

I’ve been following this craze and I’m frustrated because I really like Nokia Phones (great battery life, signal strength, reliable) but all these iPhone apps are making me want to buy an iPhone! I do not like touch screen-only devices and do like to be able to text message without having to stare at the screen. On just about every Nokia device (even the touch screens) they have the option for a slide-out keyboard that replicates a standard cell phone we all have been used to for so long. I find it easier to text message that way.
The iPhone is not the best choice considering how easy it is to break. I see friends everyday tweeting things like “ahhh just broke my iPhone display, off to Apple to pay another $500). Forget that! I for now will stick with my trusty Nokia phone and hope to see this ‘app store’ come out soon!

I have to agree with Brent, even though some of the iphone apps are widgets, it is something that is preventing me from upgrading to a WM Device phone. That being said, in 2006 I had a voice translation app in which while I as in france helped me out of the train station and into the airport. Not sure if Apple has an app like that but still, I have to admit some of the apps are pretty cool. However, the hardware on the iphone is holding me back. For instance, the fact that first of all, there is external memory card, second, the fact that you cannot access the battery, third, the 2.0 mp camera that cannot record video, third, no wifi and I could go on. It seems to me that besides the large touch screen and the great resolution the iphone isn’t that exciting of a phone..except for the apps.

Did you ever wonder how your app will stand out in a crowd of 40,000 apps? Seriously!
