Apple’s New CPUs And You

CPUThe idea of Apple designing their own microchips a few years ago would have been insane. Yet today, there is mounting speculation that Apple is indeed looking to curb future Pystar hassles, but with their mobile devices. And truth be told, I can see the logic of where Apple is coming from. After all, Apple is a hardware company. The software and operating system, is a byproduct to run on their hardware design.

So in addition to shielding their own work from rivals, they would also be working to further drive a wedge into anyone who is currently contracting to build their chips at the moment. Should Intel at some point, find themselves concerned? I really do not think so at this stage in time. Right now, Apple appears to be primarily focused on their mobile efforts. Not surprisingly, it is a huge seller for them. So protecting it makes a lot of sense.

But I do think at some level, there has to be a nagging question. By isolating their chip technology, will they be setting themselves up to fail as they would no longer be part of the community that exists today in the microprocessor world? I mean, look at the roadblock they hit in their Macs with the PowerPC CPUs. Just something to consider.
