Driving Mac Users To The PC

Normally, the idea of a Mac user returning to the dark depths of the PC world is just not something that would happen. For others, it is a matter of the individual in question learning over time that they end up using the PC more than the comparable Mac for many of the most common tasks throughout their work day.
It has been my experience that price determines the end result more than anything else. I have seen this when Linux users for instance, are looking at where they will buy - small vendor vs Dell. And Dell tends to win out as their prices are less. But what about the whole Mac vs PC argument? Clearly, the Mac provides plenty of value for the dollar spent. And more often than not, the PC it is being compared to is sub-par at best.
But what about the casual computer user who does not need anything fancy, wants a notebook and does not really want to spent a grand to do so? Which Mac is best for them? The answer thus far is that Apple does not sell junk. And that is great, for those who consider a decent $800 PC notebook junk. But mark my words, the iphone is hardly a replacement for today’s netbooks just as desktop units are hardly a replacement for the latest notebooks or MacBooks. In the end, for many people, I fear price is still a determining factor, no matter how skewed that may seem to most.

Well I think this is oblivious this is the major point behind Microsoft’s ad campaign and I know I felt the pain in price when I bought my mac =|. Don’ really know if this is news worthy seeing as people already know this.

Where haven’t we heard this one before? In the last ten minutes in #chris? When are people going to get over Apple (all in one, soup to nuts solution) versus PC (hardware and software owned by companies that hardly talk to each other, buy what you want buffet)? Use the tool that does the job for you and be happy with it. In the last couple of months, I’ve recommended the purchase of a 320 dollar refurbished Dell laptop, a 400 dollar Compaq laptop, and a 600 dollar HP laptop. All were picked for suitability to the job needed and all owners are quite happy their purchases. If someone has the money and wants a Macbook, go for it. The price issue is like saying a Saleen is too much money, but then complaining a Mustang GT isn’t fast enough. (BTW, I’d rather have a Camaro.) How fast do you want to go is how much money do you have.

To be lucky is more worth than saving money. So I never would go back to PC.

I’m a relatively new mac user. I now now own a macbook and an imac. In my opinion, I think it’s best that macs arent as commen as PC’s. It’s kind of like your favorite band that not many people know about. You feel ownership of that band… then, when everyone else discovers the band it’s just not the same. You feel like the band is now commercial and you move on.
If macs became the predominant computer than they wouldn’t have the same appeal. Jerks would start creating worms and viruses and it would be all over.
I’ll happily pay more for my Macs, i’ll enjoy the ease of use of creating my music, videos, etc. Let the others deal with the endless endless problems that are inheriant with Windows PCs.

The major advantage of Macs vs. PCs is the operating system: Mac OS X just works. In my experience, it’s way easier for someone who’s not a geek to work with a Mac (Mac OS X) than with a PC (any Windows or Linux) simply because on a Mac everything “just works”. Certainly, even Mac OS X has it’s flaws, but explaining someone how to do some everyday task on Windows or Linux and comparing that to the ease of explaining the very same thing for Mac OS X - well, the Mac’s the winner - always - at least in my experience, and I’ve worked with and on PCs (Windows and Linux) for more than 16 years before I “discovered” the Mac world…I’m never going back… ;)

My decision is to stay mac all the way, not because of brand, but because of the easy of use with Mac OS X. I know you can run mac on windows pc, but that fells sinful and it’s illegal. Also it’s not as powerful as a real mac because you need good hardware which is all you get in a Mac.

You make it sound like it’s impossible for a Mac user to go to a PC because they like it better. But it happens more often than not. I personally have never managed to use a Mac without crashing it. Not so with my PC. Maybe I beat the odds and always got the computers with the faulty equipment (because that cannot be controlled, there’s always bad hardware no matter the price.)
I’m not getting into this stupid PC vs Mac war but I can easily make music video and all of that on my PC. No need for a fancy Mac to do it.
But I don’t think most Mac users are being driven back to a PC by price. If they are being “driven back” it’s because they usually are too impatient to wait until they can afford what they view as the better system. There are some who need the computer right away but that number is most likely quite low.

I think that the money issue isn’t going to have a deal with Mac users because we already pay for the high dollar computer but guess what your getting, so in the computer world it is all in you get what you pay for and that is really true when it comes to pcs. So I still will be paying $1,500 for my new iMac every couple of years and the economy won’t stop me.

I gave one of my friends a Mac, running OS X and several months later returned it. He told me that it was fast, easy to use but some of his favorite websites weren’t compatible with OS X. He got a Windows PC, works for him, until it starts crawling… then I get a telephone call, “Help me!”
So the bottom line is, there will be a downside no matter what you decide to use, but use what makes you happy - IMO.

True. I rally think that Apple would end up making more money then they do know if they would lower their prices to compete with the rest of the market. (Dell etc.) However keep in mind that if you compare a Mac Pro to A PC of the same specs you really are not paying that much more. It is just that most people don’t need the power and fancy things that Macs include. Heck in this day and age most people just use a Web Browser. In the end though if you game then go PC, but if you are like me and you edit video go Mac. That was my reason to initially switch, but now I really do think there is something about Macs that just makes them better. They make me feel at home.

It’s not just about getting the job done, it’s the experience. Driving a BMW and a Hundai is not the same thing, even though both will get you from point A to point B. Apple has done a great job integrating a great OS with excellent hardware (i.e. touchpad on the MacBook) and with web applications (i.e. iTunes Store) and the result is a great experience.

I switched to Mac since December 2006 when I got my Macbook Pro (the first models that came with the Core2 Duo processors) and I never turned back to PCs. Macs always worked and I never had to deal with that many problems compared to PCs. I have experienced alot of hardware problems with PCs in the past, mainly Dell which made poor quality hardware and something ends up breaking before dying after 2 years of use and needing to be replaced. Not just that, I have to deal with Windows slowing down and have to do countless reinstall of Windows XP. Although Dells are cheaper than Apple Computers, PCs in general have alot of problems and I end up wasting my time trying to fix it. I will be happy to pay the extra money for a Mac even if I had to save more.
You get what you paid for.

I bought a Mac three years ago, and then found myself using my PC laptop more and more. Both of the machines seemed to have about an equal number of problems, although different ones. My Mac, for example, pinwheels all the time, and occasionally freezes to the point where I cannot quit any program, and have to reboot it. My Windows machines, however, freeze up less often, and I when it does, I can always recover without re-bootinng. My Mac had more problems with setting up peripherals than my PC did. The Mac now just sits in its spot, and gets used pretty much only for some video editing, which I’ll admit it does a nicer job of. The other thing that I’ve noticed in the three years of owning both is that the Mac definitely takes more money out of my pocket than my PC does: software costs more, and there are less free applications and utility software available. Also, I’ve reached a point with the Mac that it’s operating system is obsolete enough that almost no new software is compatible with it. It seems outrageous that after three years of operation I should have to pony up more money to upgrade a perfectly good operating system. Say what you will about XP, but it’s plenty stable and has been around forever, and isn’t going away anytime soon.
Now that I’ve learned first hand that OSX isn’t all that, I see no reason to spend $$ on Mac pc’s, when much less expensive and perfectly good alternatives exist. Everybody ends up using the machine and operating system that suits their needs (and pocketbook) best, and each system has its pluses and minuses.

I personally have used mac’s OS line from OS 7 to leopard and honestly, I have always come back to my PC running XP every time. The poster above got on the right track, that the reason macs are “”Better”" is because they are not as widespread.
check mac’s investor website and you will find that mac pc’s are only about at most 20% market share and that is for a reason: Not everyone wants to be a hippy. They only use macs to be rebellious and that’s it..So you can go ahead and ask a mac user to explain how macs only have 20% of the market share but they are oh so much better and how that makes sense and they will deny it to high hell. I love my free software and not having to pay for everything and not everyone is still in collage nor does everyone need to make music videos and goddammit not everyone wants to have to pay for everything I download, so lol itunes can kiss my ass. and 800 bucks for an entry level mac that isn’t 8 years old? Are you kidding me? I can buy a PC and play the newest games and whatnot for less than that and with macs you STILL have to use bootcamp and boot XP/Vista yet another expense to buy the MS OSto play most new games and software available to windows! Yes, vista sucks ass, but 7 is undeniable! Flame me if you want, but at least I can do the same kind of CPU and memory intensive tasks on my 600 dollar desktop PC that you can do on you 2500 dollar mac…I work for a living and don’t have a mommy and daddy to put me thru collage, and buy me an expensive mac to look cool with, I am going thru collage now at penn and i’m paying for it myself! and using an aspire one netbook at that! works like a damn charm!
