And Then There Was “Boot Camp”

Maybe it’s a bit late to cover this news because, if you where not living underneath a rock for the last couple of days, you probably know about the new feature Apple released last week called Bootcamp.
Boot camp makes it possible to dual boot your Intel Mac. So you would be able to run Windows and OS X on your Apple system! This is a small part from Apple’s Web site:
More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.
This is good news, people. I don’t think that it’s so important that you can run XP on your Mac, but that this is the step to something bigger! I think that in the next version you will be able to run Windows apps natively in OS X!
Imagine that you could walk into a computer store and pick up any game, put it into your Mac, run the setup.exe, and start playing! You could finally switch to the Mac completely and you wouldn’t have to accept that spyware and virus infected machine (read PC) in your network. OK, sorry, I am letting myself go here, but you have to agree: The possibilities are endless!
This has to have an effect on the overall market share of Apple because people that could not buy a Mac due to the fact that they needed Windows specific software for their work or for some other reason now have the ability to make their Mac a dual boot system and work in the Windows environment when they need it.
People that where “afraid” of switching from Windows to OS X can do this very slowly and take all the time the want to get used to the way OS X works.
Man, I am excited about this Boot Camp software, but mainly I am excited about the fact that the future, with Apple, is going to be very interesting!
