Saturday, we posted our take on the MacBook Pro and now have a readers take on the very same notebook we have come to love in just a short week. So, here’s what James thinks about his MacBook Pro.
I’ve had mine for about a week but then I ordered it on February 3(the release date I believe). It’s a very nice machine but I am not giving up my PC just yet. So far only one program (a 3rd party piece of software has not transfered properly). It is not as fast as I thought it would be BUT it is smoother in operation than my PC or my Powerbook. It does boot up quickly BUT I found I had to redownload Stuffit (I think it came with the Powerbook) and I had to scrable a bit to find programs to open some of my applications. I cannot remember what they were since I did it and forgot it as soon as I did it. As you no doubt know, IE for Mac is no longer available so there is no IE on this machine. I tried to download Firefox but no go. The application refused to open but that may be me more than the program. Flock works fine so far and has become my #2 browser. I haven’t tried to download Opera yet but I will.
The battery life is satisfactory I guess-it registers three hours at full charge after calibration. I wanted more but that is fine. The charge seems to hold longer than the Powerbook but that could be because this is a new machine.
It runs warm when you put it on your lap but not enough to scorch your leg.
Others will probably have more to say due to their greater experience with Mac. I am an old DOS and Windows man who cut his teeth on the TRS80 and the Apple IIe (did not like that machine). I admire the ease of use of the Apple but deplore the fact that I cannot use my essential financial applications on it. Then too there is no comparable System Mechanic and definitely no RoboForm (Keychain pales in comparison as well as the Safari autofill).
I will hold out for the dual processor if that’s what you call it (Windows and Mac) on one machine. Do not get the wrong impression-this is a nice machine and worth the money but I would liked a little more. Example-I can access a piece of equipment attached to my network twice as fast and I am being kind with my Windows machine as I can with the Mac. Maybe I am doing soemthing wrong but it should be comparable in speed since it is but a simple command and both machines are on the same network.
