OS X Hack Challange

  • No Related Post

Like most Mac freaks will know by now, there is a story going around that a Mac mini was hacked within 30 minutes of its connection to the Internet. This was some kind of strange contest that was going around. The guy that hacked this box said that: Mac OS X was “easy pickings” due to the fact that there were enough security holes to get root access quickly.

To be honest, I question this report and think that this could be a little off the truth. For example: I have questions about the way this Mac mini was configured and, besides that, I find that it’s at least a bit strange that the exploit that was used is not yet published.

This is something you should at least tell Apple so it could patch this security exploit as soon as possible!

But because there were some other people “out there” that had the same questions regarding this “hack,” they launched another competition: Mac OS X Security test. When you visit this site you can see that they closed the competition down and that there were no hack attempts that actually penetrated this system. If you look at the traffic and the amount of requests the site had to process, there where some serious hack attempts launched but with no success..

I find this competition a bit more legit, mainly because of the fact that this site gives you the complete overview about how it configured the Mac mini and what the end results were! Security and OS X is “hot” at the moment, but at this point I still trust my OS X much more than my PC!
