It seems that Windows on the Mac is just not going to happen any time soon. Why? It’s pretty simple, at least according to some of the experts!
So, what’s the big problem?
Mac OS X isn’t using BIOS, but instead it is using the new Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI). This is a new technology developed by Intel. The EFI takes control of the hardware support. With the “old” BIOS, the operating system took care of the hardware support. One of EFI’s possibilities is to get a network connection before the operating system is started, which could be very handy!
None of the Windows versions are supporting EFI at the moment. Windows XP 64 bit would support the EFI standard. But then again, Macs are 32 bit, so this version would not work, either.
The new Windows Vista is supporting EFI and so it would theoretically be possible to install Windows on the Mac. But we have to wait until the end of this year before Vista is launched!
