As we could expect, the iMac 17″ PowerPC has been removed from the Apple store. I personally think that this move went very fast; I expected that this would happen sometime next month - I mean, are they out of stock already?
It seems that the main source for exhausting this iMac 17″ stock was the online Apple store. Many ordered their last PowerPC Apple computers! I think Apple wants its iMac 20″ stock gone also because there is a price cut of 200 dollars.
To be honest, if I were to buy a computer for personal use I would not go for the PowerPC but definitely for the new Intel machines. Then again, all the programs I would use are mostly available in a universal binary. I could imagine, like I discussed in previous posts, that when you’re a user of the “pro-applications” like Final Cut or Motion, that you would like the good ‘ol PowerPC.
I saw another article that Adobe is asking its customers for a little more patience. The universal binaries are going to be available in about a year. So this could also be a reason for people to buy a PowerPC instead of going for the Intel Processor, especially if you’re a Photoshop or Flash user.
These are difficult discussions for the average Mac buyer. At the moment I am very happy with my PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz! So, I don’t have to make this discussion and probably won’t deal with this dilemma!
