Share an iPod to iTunes without Syncing It

One thing that bugs me about the iPod is that if I plug it into a PC or Mac that has never seen it, the host asks if it can sync iTunes to it. I say, “No way!” and then I have a dead attachment in the eyes of iTunes. Can’t really share the contents of that iPod. Now I can go out and find a ton of great applications that will let me grab the music off the iPod and copy them to the hard drive but that’s too much work to just bring up a few songs for some friends to hear while visiting.
Now there’s a way to just mount your iPod, or any other external device, so that iTunes sees it and thus can play the files on it! MusicPublisher from Tynsoe allows you to drop this Mac OS X application into your system and then attach your iPod and trick iTunes and start playing your jams right off that bad boy!
If you Windows fans caught the OS X part, ya, sorry man, it ain’t happening for you. This is a Mac only gem and maybe one that may get you a bit more geared to go with an Intel Mac come in the next few months. Heck, just go out and get a Mac mini now and enjoy your friends iPod today.

I actually documented a cross-platform method to do this a little while back. Using a tool called ‘Tangerine’ and a little bit of OS hackery, you can do this on any operating system.
