Is Apple Going To Drop FireWire Support On The Intel Laptops?

There is a rumor going on that Apple will drop FireWire support on the new Intel laptops. This rumor is based on the fact that there is no FireWire sync option within the iPod nano.
Another fact is that the FireWire Web page on Apple.com has been moved from a top location to one of the sublocations on Apple’s Web site. You could say that Apple is setting up its chessboard in a way that it can easily put FireWire in a “checkmate” position.
I think this could happen and surely could mean that the end is near for FireWire, but will it happen overnight? I don’t think so. I am curious what Apple is going to use as a replacement - maybe it’s USB2, maybe it’s something new…
At the end of the day, if you can transfer or back up your data to external devices at a higher speed, why would you complain?
