Why Is Apple The Media’s Darling?

Lately you can’t pick up a business or entertainment rag without Steve Jobs’ mug or an iPod on it. Apple is everywhere. What’s the deal? What’s going on? Stardom, that’s what.
Apple has something no other company right now has: Steve Jobs. Like it or not, the guy is bubbling with charisma and he knows how to work a room. He also knows how to work a cubicle and thus gets the results he’s seeking when dreaming up his next great thing. Yes, it’s not all Steve, but Steve surrounds himself with such an immense talent, it doesn’t take much to make Steve shine. Mac users are loyalists and they will preach Steve’s gospel without pay. All this combined brings to the media something different than it’s used to.
Is this media blitz going too far and getting too old? Mmm, not yet. The media will dump Steve when something else more fashionable and trendier comes along. Right now, Steve’s playing it just right and pushing the envelope faster then you can say the iPod is so yesterday. We’ve all seen the Saturday Night Live skit on Steve Jobs announcing new iPod’s one after the other and in part, it really is true. That’s the brilliance behind Steve’s madness and that’s why the media still loves him. Steve allows nothing to go stale. With all the rumors of what’s to come this January at Macworld, it sounds like he is continuing with this tradition. I have no doubt that I, and the rest of the world, will be blown away with what he and Apple will be unveiling to the world come the new year.
So why aren’t Macs flying off the shelf? Why did market share only increase a half of a percent last year? If Steve’s as awesome as I’m saying, Billy G. should be quaking in his boots, right? Well, he is. Bill Gates knows the game and he knows it takes time. IBM didn’t give him a second glance in 1979 when Gates and crew said they’d supply DOS for IBM’s Personal Computer. Now look who doesn’t make PCs anymore and yet look who owns the PC’s operating system market. It didn’t happen overnight and Steve knows that, too. Charisma, baby. Steve’s got it and IT is coming. Trust me.
