Feeling Powerful With Automator

When you actually stop and think about it for a moment, it is really incredible how much computing power we have sitting under our desks (or in our laps) these days. It’s old news (but still an impressive fact) that today’s average Macintosh has more power than all the computer systems used to the put the first man on the moon.

What good is all that power if you don’t make use of it? Being a developer, one of my all time favorite mottos is that a good programmer should be ‘lazy like a fox‘ which roughly means, “Never do what the computer can do for you”.

For many years certain Mac users have been enamored with AppleScript — the English like scripting language that comes with every Mac since the Mac OS System 7 days. AppleScript is an amazing innovation but still requires a fair amount of technical ability so to try and fix that, Apple introduced a great new application in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger called Automator which has been called “AppleScript for the rest of us” still few people even know what Automator is, much less what they can do with it. In this quick tip, I’m going to show you how you can do something really useful with Automator in less than 2 minutes, even if you’ve never so much as opened it before — and I promise, once you see how easy it is to use, it will find a much deserved spot on your Dock.
