Putting Apple’s Software to Work in The Business World

When you think of the software that Apple produces, the first thing that comes to many people’s minds are things like iLife, QuickTime, and perhaps Mac OS X. If you are a professional content producer, your list might include applications like Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Logic and Shake while Developers would have an entirely different list made up of apps like XCode, WebObjects, Xsan and Mac OSX Server.
Everyone one of these are definitely best of breed applications in their own right but hidden deep within the hallowed halls of 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, there is another piece of software that is relatively unknown to the Mac masses (which Apple actually split into it’s own company) - FileMaker Pro. Now databases are from the sexiest applications on your computer but the truth is, so much of what we do on our Macs deal directly with databases of one form or another. Quick, what do iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Mail.app, Final Cut Pro (need I go on?) and FileMaker Pro have in common? Quite simply, they are all databases of one form or another. (Prove me wrong, when you look at the applications listed above, their primary purpose is the organization of very specific types of information — ranging from music files to an image library).
