I recently discovered the “iPod Linux Project,” an Open Source project committed to porting linux onto the iPod.
It works.
Imagine using your iPod and a regular old microphone to record studio-quality audio. Or sitting on a commuter train and playing Othello, Pong, Tetris, or Asteroids. All this and more is possible when you install Linux on your third-generation or earlier iPod. Best of all, one soft reset, and you’re back in Apple’s iPod operating system, listening to your tunes. While I love technology, I’m not really the kind of guy that would venture into this kind of arena. Unless there was a reason. In my case, iPodLinux allows me to record high-quality sound on my iPod. The application: a virtual recording studio.
Imagine walking around a conference hall with this tool. You can interview anyone, pick and choose clips later - and record it all on your iPod. Pretty neat, huh? As someone who’s looking into options for his first podcast, this seems to be a great - and very inexpensive - option.
I’m planning on attending a conference next month. I’ll keep you posted on my trials.
