The Unofficial Apple Weblog, another great Mac resource

You’ve already figured out that Lockergnome is one of the best spots on the Web for learning more about Mac OS X and your Apple computer, and if you’ve read my articles here you also know about my Ask Dave Taylor site, where I field lots of Mac-related questions, from the simple to the, um, sublime.

But there are some additional Web sites worth adding to your bookmark file, including Ric Ford’s terrific MacInTouch and the troubleshooting nirvana of MacFixIt. You probably know those too, however.

So I’d like to introduce you to The Unofficial Apple Weblog, where not a day goes by without some goofy posting or three, a smart piece of news analysis, or a pointer to a slick app or widget worth investigating. To get you started at TUAW (as they call it), let me list my ten favorite articles…

First off, it’s important to know that TUAW is split into three major categories: Mac News, Mac Events and Mac Learning, and within those there are about fifty subcategories, mostly in the Mac News category as you’d expect.

  1. Dog Eats End of Power Adapter - this is a classic example of the zany and peculiar humor on the site, and it even includes a great X-Ray of the dog with, yes, the power supply neatly stuck in its stomach. Yech. I’d get another one from the Apple store if I were that dog owner!
  2. World’s Largest iPod! - again, how can you go wrong with a story about someone who took an antique phonograph and turned it into the largest known iPod docking station, complete with an LCD screen mounted inside the unit, old speakers and, yes, a working phonograph. Very cool.
  3. Macxcelerate bootable dock and hub for Mac Mini - this is a splendid example of how they report new products: not by regurgitating a press release (gak!) but by offering their two cents on why the product’s interesting and a photograph of the unit itself. When I get a Mac Mini, I’m going to buy one of these slick little add-on units, so I’ve long-since bookmarked this particular page.
  4. Extending an iTrip’s Range - To be fair, the TUAW folk seem to all be huge iPod fans and not a product announcement goes by without them linking to it and commenting somehow, from yet another iPod case to yet another iPod tuner or speaker system. Sometimes, though, they go back and look at how people are hacking products or tweaking systems to make them work better, and this story explains how someone’s popped open and done some custom mods to a standard iTrip FM transmitter to make it work quite a bit better. Interesting stuff.
  5. Daily iPod cover and case roundup - this is what i mean. It’s almost all iPods, all the time, like some crazy radio station you can’t get out of your head. I own two iPods, but I don’t have that many accessories. Do you?
  6. The Problem with Mac Fanatics, Revisited - this is a well-written article talking about both the inimitable Steve Jobs, former iCEO of Apple (he’s now just the CEO) (I kid you not about the iCEO part!) and the rabid fanatics who attack any journalist or blogger who has anything but the kindest words to say about Apple, Macs, and ‘His Steveness’. It’s pretty daft behavior on the part of the Mac aficionados, and this article explains why.
  7. More Evidence that Jobs is a Deity: No License Plates - On the other hand, TUAW doesn’t mind indulging in some good-natured ribbing of Apple CEO Steve Jobs either, even if it’s a kinda goofy story. It still makes you wonder…
  8. Stick Your Mac Mini In Your Wall - A very cool how-to that shows how to use a low-cost Mac Mini as the cornerstone of a really sophisticated home audio center. It’s tempting, but then how could you fit the nifty box under the Mini that gives you all the extra ports?
  9. DIY Wireless iTunes Remote - another neat idea, and a nice tutorial on how you can use a Linux device to extend the reach and capabilities of your iTunes app on Mac OS X. A little hacking’s good for your soul, right?
  10. How to Publish your Podcast to the iTunes Music Store - this is possibly one of the best articles I’ve read at TUAW, it offers useful and timely advice that every podcaster wants to know, in a clean and easily read format. Well worth the read if you’re even just interested in Podcasting and how some podcasts make it into the Apple iTMS while others don’t…

So that’s all I have to say about The Unofficial Apple Weblog, other than to suggest that you add it to your Mac-related bookmarks if you haven’t already done so.
